Ok, I went ahead and bought a 12 bolt that is supposedly from a 70 Monte. I have several questions...first, the only code I can find on the axle housing is:KDC 204 8 What does this mean? This is a non-posi with 2:73 gears (supposedly) and I want to put in a posi...does it matter on carriers or do certian carriers match certain housings? How do I tell what is what on carriers? Do Monte rear-ends use C-Clips? Should I use C-clip eliminators? Also, there is sort of a "wave" looking ridge in the cover, is that there for a reason, or can I just get a smooth cover for it.

Sorry for all the questions, I am rear-end stupid but want to learn about what I have.

Thanks,
Bill C.

Carriers are not matched to specific rear ends. So yes, you can simply switch a posi carrier into what was formerly a non-posi housing. In regards to the "bulge" in your rear end cover-yes it does serve a purpose. It helps to direct the splashing oil to sides in an attempt to get adequate lubrication to the axle bearings. You should keep the factory cover or get an aftermarket one that has the bulge.

Use a "series" carrier equal to the gears. i.e.;
3.09-3.73 gears = series 3 carrier.
4.10- up equal series 4 carrier.
However, there are some manufactures making gears that cross that barrier. You may find a 4.10 gear that fits a series 3 carrier or a 3.73 gear that fits a series 4 carrier.

Sound confusing? Well it's much easier than it seems. Just figure out what gear you want to run and order the gears and carrier at the same time, preferably from the same company. This way you'll be sure to get the proper set-up.
It will have C-Clip's.
If you must have C-Clip eliminators let me know, I have a set of eliminators with axles for $80.
As I have been told by many builders of stock and racing differentials:
"If your Chevelle is a daily driver then I'd stick to the stock configuration. C-Clip Eliminators have a tendency to have premature seal failure and leak. This is due to the side to side action of the axles on the seal."
