I found a 1966 chevelle and want to know how much to offer the guy. is is all I know about the car:

The car is in western New York and has been repainted, the paint job is not show quality but
I have seen worse. the block was replaced with a 402 but the guy told me it
was the original heads. he tried to replace the carb. and the ignition. he
put a electronic ignition on it and know it back fires though the carb. the
interior has been redone and it has a four speed and a bench front seat. the
car was very dirty when i saw it and the guy hasen't ran it in 5 years. the
body is in good shape, not to many bondo jobs and it has a manual
convertable top. the heater core has been unhooked and it doesn't have power
steering or brakes.
If you could help me i would appreciate that. I would like to know how mush
to offer the guy for the car. it is a sharp looking car and i would love to
be able to buy it. so if you could help me i would appreciate it more than
you would know.

BEFORE you buy this car, do some more checking. Did you look underneath? Besides the usual floor pan rust, these cars tend to rust out the frames (I found this out too late-save yourself!). This is not cheap or easy to rectify.

I am confused about the engine. 409's were discontinued in early '65. They are easy to recognize due to unique scalloped valve covers. If this is truly what it is, the HEI won't fit it, they use different distributors. Could it be a an overbored 400 smallblock, or an overbored 402 big-block? You'll want to know for sure what you're getting.

I don't know what you should offer, but keep this in mind-$12,000 will by you a real nice convertible, more for an SS. Try to honestly figure what it will cost to make this car nice; if gets too high, look for another car.

Good luck!
