: 68 Chevelle Emissions?

Hello.

I am doing a study comparing a 1968 Chevelle to todays Chevrolet Cavalier. (It seems that is the closet thing in the Chevrolet lineup to what a Chevelle was).

I was wondering, where can I get information on the exhaust emissions of a 1968 396 TH 400 Chevelle combo. This is one of the factors I would like to look at.

Can anybody suggest any resources for this type of thing?

Call the government agency that controls emission regulations in your state. Or check your local smog station, they might have the information on hand. Why are you comparing a 396 and not a 6 cyl, this would a more direct match. And why not a Nova instead of a Chevelle?

Check with the State of Utah, they still check my '68 yearly.

Steve,

We don't do emissions testing in Wisconsin. Why a Chevelle vs a Cavalier? Because I felt it would be a close comparison.

Consider:

A Nova probably equates more with a Metro or a Storm in the current Chevrolet lineup.

Why a 396 instead of the 230 6? Well, not much factual info out there on a straight six equipped Chevelle. Besides, I don't think it is a wholly unfair matchup.

Once you have made up your mind, facts are but a mere annoyance.

In Arizona they still test cars from 67 and up. Try contacting the motor vehicle department or the smog stations here to see what standards cars this old have to meet.

Another thing that you might consider is to compare cars that are still made today. Like comparing the old camaro with the new camaro. You will be more consistent and less biased in your comparison since these cars have used the same displacement engine (350ci) since 1969.

Unless you can get some 1967 leaded gasoline and run it through the old car you really can't compare what they used to put out the exhaust pipe to what is put out now by a new or old car.

Actually, they do test in Milwaukee County.

Give a call to the DOT and see if they know who to check with, or check the Milwaukee Yellow Pages for a shop that does testing

If this is your vehicle (68 396) take it to an emissions capable shop and have it tested. If not find someone that has one and is willing to let you test it.
A well tuned engine without emissions controls won't be that much different than today's vehicles (with the exception of slightly lower HC emissions, due to air injection). If you take away the after-treatment newer engines aren't that much better. *Note I said well tuned! Most emissions controls came about because the general public doesn't keep their engines well tuned. The computer controls are designed to compensate for that.
