I have the opportunity to go look at a $300 71 Lemans parts car about an hour away which I realize is an "A" body. The owner said it used to have a 455 in it and it has buckets and a console. Does anybody have any experience with the rear ends in this car? Would it be a chevy 12 bolt since it had the big block option? I really don't want to make the drive unless there is a good possibility of a 12 bolt. All replies greatly appreciated!!

An hour away? My commute to work is longer than that and I take a high speed train. Sure, Pick-A-Part is only 5 minutes from my house but they reserve all their Chevelles for "special" customers. I've been known to drive 400+ miles for parts. I'm jealous.

I have never seen the chevy 12 bolt in a pontiac from the factory, only the HD 10 bolt. Still may be a good piece if its a posi and you dont have the cash for a chevy rear.

It would be worth checking into. Many 12 bolts found their way into A-bodies over the years.I have heard limited quantaties of 12 bolt chevys made it into other A-bodies from the factory but I've yet to see original doucumantation to prove it.

Factory 455 powered A-body Pontiacs came with 12 bolt chevy rearends. They are not common but they did come that way. A few of my friends are into Pontiacs, one having a 71 Judge, another a 70 455 GTO, both came with 12 bolts from the factory. Also have seen several 70-72 Grand Prix's at the wrecking yard with 12 bolts. It is worth the trip.

If it has original A body bucket seats and a disc brake setup, it would be worth the trip for those two items alone.
