: angle or straight plugs?

OK folks,
I know this may sound like a stupid question, but how do I know if my heads have straight or angled plugs? Its a 400sb built between 70-72. TIA,

Kevin,
No production vehicle ever came with angle plugs. They were only available on over the counter performance heads like the old 292's etc. If the plugs go straight into the head, perpendicular to the exhaust flange, they are straight. If they are on about a 15 degree angle forward and back, they are angle plugs.

what is the purpose of angled plugs??

Buddy,
The angled plugs are supposed to put the spark plug tip in a better position for proper combustion in a performance motor. On a stock or mildly modified motor it probably does not make enough difference to worry about.

Since Kevin was talking about a 400 small block I'd assume Bill's response was referencing small block heads. I'd give him the benefit of the doubt on this one - especially since he knows a few things about this stuff.

I do not doubt bill..
just trying to clarify/absorb some of his knowlegde in my own mind

i didnt know that no SB came with angle plugs but i am of the impression that many BB did...this is what i am asking

did BB come with both and was there a correlation between performance and plug type??

Rich,
All big blocks have the plugs angled. There is no "straight plug" head that I know of for the big block.

Only the small block had different spark plug angles. All stock/factory small blocks have straight plugs. As Bill said, the angle plug heads were available only over the counter.

And don't confuse straight and angle. It is not that angle is better than straight or straight better than angle; it is where the tip of the spark plug is placed in the combustion chamber that makes one "better" than the other. All SB could have come with angle plug heads and moving them to straight made the combustion process more efficient.

Rich,
Yes I was speaking of the Small Block heads. Maybe we can figure out a way to make some straight plug Rat heads http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
