: LT1 swap

Just got my '71 Malibu back and the paint and body look great, but that original 307 2v is tired and needs to be rebuilt. In my garage sits a '94 LT1 w/ 700R4 with about 20,000 miles on it waiting to be used.

I can get a wiring harness custom made for about $650 and the ECM will have to be reprogramed for another $350.

My question is who has done this swap and what problems did you encounter? I know I'll need an electric fuel pump. Should I put it in the fuel tank? And I'll have to have a fuel return line back to the tank, are these readily available or do I plan on making my own?

Just general questions I'm mulling over and figured some of you guys out there have done this already and you could say I'm trying to "pick your brain" for info and the BEST way to do this swap.

Anything you guys can come up with would be greatly appreciated. As they say "a bunch of heads are better than one". (not totally correct)

Phil Wyatt from up in Anna (near denton) is a wiz at this. I have seen his LT 1 pickup, and he has done many others. He builds new or modifys stock harnesses. Really knows his stuff. I have his phone # at home. If you'd like it email me.

rick,
Phil is the guy that quoted me the prices. Yea I'll go with his harness, but it'll take 8 weeks to get it. No, that's not how long it will take to build one. He said it'll only take about 2 or 3 days for that, it's just that he's back-logged that far. He also said that he's been told that his harnesses are "idiot" pruff. That's good. I'll have to find out exactly where his place is and go up there and talk with him for a bit. Get a handle on exactly what it's gonna take.
I've seen his pick-up and really liked it. I've also seen his and his brothers 2 Impala's. One's a '65 SS and the other is a '66 SS. Really nice cars. The radiators in them looked really small, but in talking with his brother, he said that because of the "reverse flow", neither one ever runs over about 160.
Yea, I think I'm gonna have to spend a Saturday up in Anna talking with Phil.

You might want to double check that transmission. If it is the one that came behind that motor it should be a 4L60E.
If it is you will need to modify your speedo drive.
