: G-car steering box -- survey

By now, the only component worth salvaging from a 1983-88 GM G-body is a 12.7:1 steering box. (Another thing to keep in mind is a wrecked 1992-96 Caprice 9C1 or Impala SS, which has a similar box).

One thing that I came across in several Houston-area salvage yards is any 1983-88 G-body with a 32mm front sway bar (worthless to A-body owners, unless one has a 3rd. Gen F-car), common with RPO F41. When spotting a G-body with the 32mm and 23mm (7/8") rear sway bar, a constant ratio, 14.4:1 steering box (Saginaw 800 series) is common. The steering ratio is similar to a 1977-81 F-car (Z28 or Trans Am).

Besides the hybrid steering coupler (the G-car box has a smaller diameter shaft) and o-ringed hydraulic lines (unless someone went one step further with flare inserts and hydraulic hose fabrication), has anyone had any luck with a steering box upgrade? Hope no one swapped in an IROC-Z box.

I haven't done it myself but I know it is commonly done from the cars you talked about.

What has to go on in order to make the 12.7:1 gearbox swap with my old Chevelle? Help me turn corners....I've already got the Hotchkis springs, boxed control arms and sway bars. Thanks.

Guess what I just gutted a 88 Iroc box and set it up to go in my camino.Believe it or not it was very easy to do.I went with the oring type seats.. What was done was disassemble the 88 box for cleaning and Insp. Dissassemble 72 Camino box for the stops no internal stop just needed the end cap. resealed the 88 box with the 72 end stop installed new coupler from Lee Mfg
If you dont want to tangle with it or dont feel comfortable doing the reseal and rework Id be happy to help you out

Phil did you take out the internal stop in the IROC box? It is a wire ring located at the bottom of the big end. Philip

No Philip I left the one in the housing(left turn stop?)spoke with Mrs Lee?at Lee Mfg and I believe she said to only change it if the original 72 box had one.I probably screwed up and left the wrong one in. I'll check the steering turns and degrees when I get home tonight. Car is on jacks awaiting Tpi motor (mounts are on the way)
