My ?: Was there ever a such thing as a 1972 Chevelle Malibu SS? A car dealer near my house claims to have one. I looked at the car and it appears to be in pristine condition. It has a 350-2 barrel in it. The dealer is asking $10,000.
The VIN is 1D37H2K556940
Can anyone validate the authenticity of this car? And whether it's the real thing or not, how much should I pay for this car at most?
Thanks!

SS after 1968 was an option, not a separate line. They are all "Malibu's" after that as far as GM was concerned.
I may be wrong, but the 1972 350 had a 4 barrel.
Without documentation, it is hard to tell an SS clone after 1968

You could get a '72 350-2bbl car, and the H in the serial # represents a 2 bbl car originally. Does it have a sweep dash speedometer, or the round gauge pod style? It's really hard to tell on these cars. The S.S. package was an option, and most of the things can be changed over off a non-S.S. car.

The only way to tell if it is a true SS, is to find the build sheet.
If the car has been restored, chances are someone has found it.
From 69 on up All SS Chevelle's are a Malibu with the SS option.
The build sheet is the list of every option the car came with. it was used as the car rolled down the assembly line.

did the car come with factory sway bars, and what kind of differential did it come with. 72 should have the rally wheels (5 spoke, look kind of like torqe-thrust)
