Can you tell from a VIN number whether or not a car is an original SS?

On 1969-1972 models it is not possible by the vin alone like the earlier years. From '69-72 "SS" was an option not a separate line.

It is a well known scientific fact: put 5 lab rats in a white room, in one corner put a late model Ford Mustang 5.0, in the other corner place a piece of cheese carved in the shape of a Chevy Chevelle. The rats will choose the Chevelle 99.95% of the time.

The one I'm actually concerned with is a '66. So I CAN tell on a '66 then? If so, how?

There is tons of info here devoted to identifing Chevelles. Most of it written by Skip Cain and others. It was very valuable info when I went looking for my 66 Chevelle. Without it I would have made some big mistakes. See the following as a start:

If it's an American built car, then the model number will be 13817 for 2 door Hard Top or 13867 for Convertible. If the car has the original motor, the last six digits of the VIN should also be present on a pad on the front passenger side of the block jutting out from just below the head. If it's a Canadian car, you can call GM Canada to get the details as the SS option was available on Malibu's (13617 and 13667 model)

K, more an more folks are going to a lot of trouble to make fake documentation and swap VINs and cowl plates. Let me know when you get serious and I can tell you a couple of hidden places to look for the model number which should also indicate if it is a true SS. I found some while doing a complete cloning of my own 67 (my keeper car), so maybe they did the same in 66.

The vin. is also stamped on the trunk lip, and on the rear of the frame.
