After doing some painting in my engine compartment on my 66 I replaced my battery cables with a thicker fine strand wire. I did have my grounds off while doing some painting, anyway when i went to try the lights they didnt work matter of fact I have no power to anything Im thinking maybe I have bad grounds. I have'nt had time to check this out yet but I thought Id get some ideas before I checked in case It is'nt a grounding problem. Any advise would be helpfull ,thanks pops

Well, check the obvious first: does your battery have juice? Since you just painted the engine compartment, make sure your grounds are touching metal, not paint. The paint is not a conductive surface, so if the grounds are bolted down on the paint, they aren't doing their job. Also, I don't know if you've done this or not, but run a smaller gauge ground wire from your negative terminal to your fender. This will help ground it a bit better. Double check all of your battery connections and terminals. If your terminals are the coated type (painted, usually found at cheap parts stores), they will not conduct as well as non-coated. Good luck and keep us posted!

When you replaced your battery cables did you also replace the positive cable? If so did you remember to hook up the smaller 10 guage wire that runs from the positive battery post to the terminal block on the radiator support? This is the source of power for everthing besides the starter. Sometimes a replacement battery cable doesnt have this extra lead from the clamp, so you may have forgotten about it. If thats the case just get a new cable with the extra wire on it. Be sure to double check your ground connections even if this is the problem.

Boy I feel dumb I connected the wire that goes to the radiator support terminal to the neg side, now that I switched it every thing seems to be working now. I probably wont be able to start my motor for about another week or so but as for now that problem is fixed easily with both of your help, thanks for saving me some time. THANKS POP
