I am going to look at a supposed 70SS 454 this week. The guy has no paperwork to speak of, so I am hoping we can find the build sheet. If we do, what block number should have which codes to indicate the SS package? Is there a separate code for 396 vs 454? I will also be checking the block and trans numbers, so hopefully something will match up. Thanks for any input.

For a 454, on the VIN stamping pad (behind the alternator) you are looking for:
For an LS5 - CRT, CRQ or CRN (not likely)
For an LS6 - CRV, CRR or CRS (not likely)

For matching numbers, the VIN number on the vehicle and title will be on the same stamping pad (under normal conditions).

The build sheet will list the same engine codes and look for Z15 Conv.

If you really get lucky and find the buildsheet box 27 will list the letters Alan posted w/o the "C" ie RV, RR, etc. The options including engine type will also be spelled out on the lower section of the buildsheet. Is this guy really going to let you dismantle his car looking for the buildsheet?

Other points...

The quick check list, it could possibly be an SS if it has these:

Clear NOT AMBER parking/turnsignal lenses in the front bumper.

Rear sway bar--was mandatory on all 70-72 SS

A dash that does NOT have rectangular sweep gauge.

"SS" and below it a engine emblem

example:

SS
396

mounted on the front fenders.

SS emblem on middle of front grill

A blackened grill NOT argent silver

An SS bumper pad mounted on rear bumper.

If it has the wrong items...be suspicious.

Good luck! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

Thanks everyone, good stuff. I'll let you know how it turns out. Not sure if I will go Mon. or Tues., depends on some work stuff tomorrow. I want to try to see it in the light of day, you know how that goes. I can say it is not an LS6, which I secretly hoped I could get for a steal. But it could be a nice LS5 since it has AC, PS, PDB, tilt wheel, buckets, gauge package, cowl hood and he says the body is in excellent shape.

I was going to take some tools and talk him into dropping the tank. If I remember the build sheet should be on the drivers side? Anyone find it on the passenger side? If not there I will look behind seatbacks, under rear seat and any other place I can think of.

LS-6, I think if I make it clear it is to his advantage if I find it, he will. The price is low enough that I think he could make a little more easily if he just had the documentation to back up the story. I'm jumping ahead a bit, but I think it is worth a try.
