I know this is not a Chevelle question, but how many have seen a 1969 full size Caprice/Impala with the Hideway headlight treatment? Wondered how unusual it is.

Thanks

From the best of my research and after owning numerous SS427 Impala's, this is supposed to be a Caprice only option. I have a somewhat complete set. But I also know that money talked in '69 and you could special order almost anything though I have NEVER seen a documented Impala's with hideaways.

i have. matter of fact, i'd love to have one. 1969 impala SS427 with a 4 speed would do nicely. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

1968 & 1969 Caprice-only (o.k. Kingswood Estate). Pretty rare.

Rare . . . ok
But sought after?? I would think that a 69 Caprice probably has a VERY small following. I mean what could one of those caprices be worth done?? $7,000 tops in #1 condition? Unrestored maybe $1200-1500 in unrestored, running condition with everything there? Maybe less?

Maybe a rare, and kinda cool car but I doubt it would be worth much.

But I do wish they would have had a hid away headlight chevelle. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif

The number of caprice built with hideaways was 23,797 which included headlight washers in 69 . only the washers were available on Impala .Hideaways not correct for SS427.

Hey all...

My best friend Andy, (LTLCRZY427) has a '69 Caprice, and he has said that the following is more of a 'cult' thing. There's the 'big car guys' and then there's 'everyone else'. He just purchased a hideaway kit for his car, and it's a '69 Caprice 427. I'm not exactly sure if it's correct or not, but he's going to use them because they look REALLY good. He would be here to tell you guys about it, but his computer is in a pile of parts right now... http://www.chevelles.com/forum/frown.gif

Check out my signature to see our webpage, and pictures of his '69....it's worth the time to take a look. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/cool.gif

Those 69s look awesome with the hideaways. Only one I saw was in alabama, when I was picking up my 66ss396 down there. The guy lived in a trailer, had a huge pole barn, and had musclecars sitting everywhere. He had a 69 BB caprice there with the hideaways just sitting. I had a 69 impala convertible in college, great drive in movie car cause you could get like 5 people sitting across the top of the back seat with the top down. I was always looking for a complete hideaway setup, but never did find one before I traded the car for a 69 chevelle.

I have owned several SS427 Impala's and currently own two with a third on the way. Yes, some of those guys are "big car guys" but not all. Some of us like ALL Chevrolets...........even Chevettes....(just kidding) Caprices were typically 335 HP versions only, I have seen an occasional 390 HP but no 425 HP versions. Those cars look awesome with hideaways and short of ruining the value of a real SS427, I would install then on any Impala/Caprice. That option would have really looked good on a Chevelle.

Mr. D you are pretty far off in your estimate for the 69 full size's. Most BB cars are going for at least 5K unrestored. One on Ebay recently took around 9K. It was a low option Caprice with 427/390hp, in non-original condition. They may not be as popular as the Chevelles and Camaros, but I kinda like it that way. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif

As for the hideaways, well...as soon as I install my newly purchased setup I'll show you what they look like. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/cool.gif

Now if I'd just get that 4 speed in... http://www.chevelles.com/forum/rolleyes.gif

Well, just about any big block car is worth more than a small block car. But, those came in the small block form as well.

So what do you think an average small block 69 caprice with hide away headlights is worth?

BTW your cars looks like a fun projects.

So you own three caprices? 66, 69, and the 77?

I only own one caprice (see sig). My wife hates the early caprices and impalas. I have tried to change her mind but she won't budge. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/frown.gif

I sold my 1970 SS454 montecarlo last year . . . all original with buckets, gauges, many other options, etc and could only get $4,500 for it. No rust, very restorable and running condition.

Mr.D I wish I was around when you sold your 70 SS 454 Montecarlo for 4500, in mid Mo. that was give a way price if it wasn't beat up real bad. As for the BIG CARS I have a 69 Impala custom coupe factory 396/400 turbo car sitting on back fence for last 20 years that my dad bought new, lately it starting to look like a good project to me,lots of room, big block power!

I've seen good condition 2 door caprices with small blocks go for about $3-4K. That's without any really rare options (including the hide-a-ways). Obviously you could get a beat to heck one much cheaper...guess it depends on how hard/long you look.

The 77 is now gone. That was actually my fathers car...I was going to play with it, but since its gone now I don't know what to do with my Caddy engine.

The other two are all mine tho. I've had the 69 for about 4.5 years now. The 66 is a recent purchase that needs some (alot) of TLC, but that's why I bought it! It's my driver for right now...hopefully some major work will start this summer...

The 69 Custom Coupes are pretty unique...Caprice roofline but Impala trim. Haven't seen a whole lot of those around. The big cars are a riot tho. It's funny all the looks you get...especially when you're packin' a BB! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/cool.gif

There was a 1969 4 door black Caprice for sale at the swaps around here 2 years ago.It had every and I mean EVERY available option with factory paper to prove it.It couldn't get sold for 10K.It finally did for 6500.00 and it was unrestored but didn't need it.Very clean.

I'd thank you for an L72-power Biscayne.
The hideaways are rare, but in my neighborhood in the 70's there were 2 with hideaways. One was a 350-powered Caprice coupe (LM1 or L48, don't know), the other was a Caprice sedan, loaded with 427 390 horse, a/c AM/FM, 8-track, turbine wheel covers like the Corvette, fender skirts, rosewood wheel etc. Oh, and about 4 blocks from my house was a '69 Impala SS427 Custom Coupe. I first saw it in '71 & last saw it in '77. I also saw an SS427 convertible in 1980. A 427 Biscayne used to travel through town (an L36 I think). I can remember literally dozens more '69 Big Cars, including a one-time sighting of an Impala Sport Sedan with a factory six. Like I said, nearly all these sighting were withing a few blocks of my house in 1969 through the seventies (and a Cortez Silver Biscayne 2-door with factory Burgundy 2-tone & a 327). I'm not even going to go into 3 different '69s of my neighbours, or 3 other Kingswood Estates, or my cousins Impala Sport Sedan, or...

(...saying to myself, 'OK, Bill, strike while the iron is hot!')

Just in case this has piqued anyone's interest in full size 69 Chevys, I happen to have a frame-off restored 69 Impala convertible for sale. Winter price, $11K. If interested, email me. And, sorry, it does NOT have hideaway headlights.

My wife and I have owned the Impala for almost 18 years now, so I've paid attention to those that I see. Saw a light green 69 Caprice with 390 HP 427 and factory 4 speed for sale at a car show about 15 years ago. Never seen it since. That's got to be a rare bird.

What happened to the '77? Did you sell it? How much $ did you get for it? Wish you would have let me know; that car looked really clean!

With all the talk of big Chevys, perhaps one of you can help me out. I've been looking for a 1969 Biscayne or Bel Air L-72/4 speed car for some time... It has to be a 69, L-72, and 4 speed. If anybody knows where I might find one, I'd sure appreciate hearing from you! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

Good luck finding a L-72 car. They only made a few hundred. And as for the 4 speed, there is only 2-3000 documented (I think that's the right number) and that's for all engines, not just L-72...

And as far as seeing lots of these cars back in the 70s. GM did produce 1,000,000 of these cars. So finding one isn't all that hard, but finding a good one (or one you like) is just like finding a good old car anywhere...you gotta look...and it'll probably take $$$.

Here is a pic of my 70 just before I sold it. I made a trip to the moon with it. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

I was just messing around with the affects on the photo program I have.

No one would give me SQUAT for it. I had the build sheet too!!!.

It ia still local. I ended up selling it to a good friend who has like 8 montes. But he didn't have the SS454 car.

Believing a car is worth a ton of money and the reality of selling it are sometimes two different things. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/frown.gif
