I am hoping someone can assist me in dealing with two maddening squeaks/rattles in my 1970 Chevelle SS396 Coupe with TH400. The first squeak appears to be coming from within the console assembly at or behind the shifter (closer to the dash). I have tightened all the trim screws that are visible from the outside of the console. Could it be the linkage assembly? It only makes noise while the car is moving or going over bumps.

The other noise is coming from the driver side A pillar (next to the windshield). The metal cover seems to be rubbing up and down and making a lound squeek. The car doesnt appear to have ever been hit, and again, I tightened the screws holding the metal pillar cover in place? Anyone out there in Chevelle Land ever conquer similar demons? Thanks in advance for your help!!

I have the same squeek by the A pillar on the driver's side...but only in colder weather....I have just been living with it but I wouldn't mind it going away forever http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

The console squeek may be your shifter mounting bolts. My'67 has a B&M Quick Silver shifter that started to squeek even after I tightened them up but when I loosened them the noise went away?!?

Morris,

Concerning squeak #2. What mine turned out to be was the dash pad. Someone in the past had broken two of the pad clips that hold the pad down near the windshield. The squeak sounded just like the A pillar. As a temporary fix, I just layed a strip of butle down and refastened the dash pad. Sanity was re-established, hope this works for you.

Joe:

Thanks for the suggestion. However, in my case it's definitely the A pillar, as if I push on the pillar hard, the squeaking stops.

When you pull the post pad look closely at the top,for a hair line crack. If there is one it will hafta be welded. I have seen this in camaros.

I had the same A-pillar squeak from time to time. I tried tightening the screws, but it just wouldn't work. I hate to tell ya what did....oh my baby...everytime it squeaked, I banged it with the back of my fist. After about the 3rd time, it stopped for good. WARNING! This suggestion is not for everybody, and don't use the "get a bigger hammer" method on anything that you care to break. I LOVE my car, ARRRRRRRGH, but beware the demon SQUEEEEEEEEEEEAK!!!!!!!

Hey MMCPorter, This may sound kida lame ,,,,but mabey just mabey You could squirt some caulking in behind the peice that You think is ratteling,,um mabey loosen the bolts a bit ,,,squeeze some in and retighten. i know this probably isnt the greatest idea,,,,,ummm I had a bad buzz ,rattel on a trim peice that was in back of the window on a 82 chev pu. anyway evertime my stereo hit some heavy bass it buzzed and ratteled,,,so i squeezes some caulking in behind it and never heard anything again... Good luck,,,,,Loner
