: Rag Joint Ground

I'm currently replacing the rag joint on top of the steering gear box. After removing the original, I noticed there is a ground wire that is incorporated in the joint itself(this grounds across the rubber in the joint). Now the new GM rag joint that I purchased does not have the ground in it. There is no way to remove the old ground set-up from the original joint, so what do I do.

The GM service manual shows a metal ribbon that is used which is unlike what I have now. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The ground strap is there to make the return circuit for the horn button. The bearing in the coluum do not always provide a good ground, especially when turning the wheel. You can make a ground with wire or a metal tab(prefferably copper or brass).

Use a meter and check for continuity from one side of the rag joint to the other. The connection might be built into the rag joint.
