: Best Small Block heads for the money
Hot66ss Jan 8th, 00, 3:50 PM Im looking for small block heads that flow the most for my money. I have about $700 bucks to spend on a complete set of heads. I looked into the Vortec heads but didn't really like them because the bolt pattern and the small valves (I want 202s).I would LIKE aluminum but I don't think that its possible on my budget http://www.chevelles.com/forum/frown.gif Any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks

drptop70ss Jan 8th, 00, 4:02 PM I think if you save up a few hundred more you could go with the edelbrock aluminum ones, I believe the trickflows are a little less money but I have heard conflicting stories about how good they are. (I personally have not used them)

Pat Kelley Jan 8th, 00, 4:41 PM TrickFlow has a new 23 deg head, different than their old twisted flow head. The price may be in your price range. I haven't seen them nor do I know anything about them. Might be worth reseaching.

plain 69 Jan 8th, 00, 4:56 PM My brother just bought a new set of World Products Sportsman II cylinder heads for 720.oo dollars complete except for rocker arms. The speed shop we go to bought them for us. They have 2.02 1.60 valves with 64cc cumbustion chambers and 200cc ports. I have them on my 406 and they made almost 400horsepower on the dyno with a Performer RPM Q-jet intake, Q-jet, Extreme Energy Comp 274 cam.

Randy Mosier Jan 8th, 00, 6:01 PM Dart Iron Eagles sell in the $900 range, fully assembled. Don't dismiss the vortech heads just yet. There is a cast iron intake available for the vortechs that allows the use of q-jets or other spread bore carbs. It is sold by Don Hardy Racing in Floydada, Texas. There are a number of aluminum intakes available as well. It's gonna be tough finding new heads for what you have to spend.
68Malibu Blown 406 Jan 8th, 00, 6:39 PM Try CANFIELD heads from Competition Products. Good castings, good parts, good flow numbers good price.

I saw the new "fast burn" alum chevy head for $1000.They are supposed to be a excellent head for the money.Iron eagles are excellent for the money.I'd save a little while longer for the heads you want. The vortecs make a lot of power but I don't like the thickness of the surface deck.Just too thin for me.But they did make a lot of power on a 400 I had.

MAXX2 Jan 9th, 00, 8:45 AM The Vortec Heads can be reworked to accept the 2.02/1.60 valves(Look at your 2000 GM Performance Parts Catalog (page 54). Call Don (parts dept) at Sallee Chevrolet 1-800-545-0048. I'm not sure, but they probably can do the rework for you plus add the stronger springs, etc.
Let us (the members-etc) know what you find out. It is definitely worth the call!!!!!

MalibuJerry350 Jan 9th, 00, 9:21 AM Check out this month's issue of Super Chevy. They did a "mild" build up of a 350 with a Comp Cams Xtreme Energy 268 cam and lifter package, and a pair of Vortec heads. Final dyno specs were 374.6 horses at 5700 RPM and 407.5 foot pounds of torque at 4300 RPM. Not bad! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif This for about 800 dollars invested, heads, cam kit and Edelbrock intake. Very interesting! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
DZAUTO Jan 9th, 00, 10:22 AM I'm sure the Vortecs are good all the way around, with one exception, too thin. From past experience over the years, I have concluded there is no substitute for durability like the extra thickness provided by heavier castings.
The Dart and World heads seem to provide this. For a longtime driver, I think I would go with something likd Dart/World cast iron.
Plus they are affordable.

L6571SS Jan 9th, 00, 3:18 PM I have the Vortec heads on my 355 and they work very well. I can see how many people don't like how they use the lighter castings. But you have think that these are production heads and they have been used on thousands of GM trucks that are abused everyday.

Bob M Jan 9th, 00, 3:47 PM Does anyone have experience with the Vortec heads that have been redrilled for conventional intake manifolds? The extra charge for the redrilling is very little.

Rick Morder Jan 10th, 00, 2:40 PM I've heard that the late model 305 58cc heads work great for increasing the compression on a basically stock motor, and are very reasonably priced, $400 to $600 for the pair complete (less rockers), I'm thinking about a set for my low compression 72, 8.5 to 1, 350
L6571SS Jan 10th, 00, 7:20 PM Rick, theres a good chance that set up will give you more compression than you want. Why not just find a set of 64cc heads, a lot more common, with a lot more choices.
