I think a while back it we discussed different/alternative manufacturers that make X pipe cross overs. I think it was Gene that had posted the info. Anyone know who makes X pipes besides Dr Gas? and how much they charge?

thanks

You can make your own, from mandrel bent tubing. Just look at the Dr. Gas one on the linked site and copy it. Simple, easy, low cost, and it works.

Two mandrel bends I get usually cost no more than 4 bucks a piece, that's 8 bucks, and a little hacksaw, fit-up and weld time.

If your going to build your own I would recomend building a quick jig to hold the tubing and cut them on a band saw using the jig. That way they are symetrical.

I'd wold also recomend that if you are not say the best with a welding kit to take a plate and cut a hole in it that mimics the cut in the tubes, sorta like this [o] and weld the tubes onto the plate so it looks somehting like this )|(. That way you have good strong welds that won't break under load.

I ordered a Dr. Gas for about $100 but Hedman offers one also (2 and 1/2" diameter).

They claim that the oval cut joining the two tubes has some math behind it.

So you put 45 bend in 2 3" sections of pipe 20" long, take out your plasma cutter and cut out the two symmetrical ovals you just scribed. Not being a welder, I imagine you tack the two together in a few spots using your wire feed, weld the bottom up, tack on the square plate ( they have a square plate on the bottom, for strength/road protection or for holding the 2 pieces right during the weld I dont know), weld the plate on compeltely and then finish the joining weld.

You'll have to run down my old post; I saw a product release in PHR and it was a firm in Brooklyn NY that had just the X pipes for around $120.

Whatever this deal is, it flat out works.

OK found the info. Now I just need to see if I can track down a web site for these guys... Hate to run up that long distance bill... For now we may just end up going with the Flowmaster kit and swap on the other kit at a later date... I sure know we have plenty of projects we can use it on!

thanks

Dr. Gas also has one with 3" inlets and 2 1/2" outlets so you can eliminate the collector reduces. Run 3" to the X, 2 1/2 out the tail.

I know this is a poor example, but this is the best we could do on a small block Ford Fairlane. They're not hard to make, just requires a little mig experience. http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/JoeGxpipe.jpg

I'll let you peek under my 67's skirt.!Here's the 3.5" to 3" outlet deal. You can see their little gusset under the actual X.

Dr. Gas said its best to match the inlet of the X to the header collector dia. So if you run 3" collectors, then the 3" X 2.5" Xpipe is exactly the ticket as Doug mentioned.

I'm glad to see the tapered X pipes are available. I have alwasy thought a taper would work well in the X pipe situations.

There is a consideration in the actual mating of curve to curve, and is mildly important, but not earth shattering super tech. With only a little bit of info, anyone can build an X pipe correctly.

Dr. Gas does have some nice clear photos on their site. http://www.drgas.com/photo3.5x3.html

Is this like your's Gene? 3 1/2 x 3.

It'll be a while before I'm ready for the exhaust but I'd love to use an X! The local shop said they could make one.
