: Rockers came loose, sugeestions please
David Nafarrete Apr 16th, 00, 5:58 PM My engine started revving funny, got what felt like valve float at a lower RPM(5800), I can normally rev to 6500 no problem. Then soon after I was getting this tapping sound, slow and quiet at first then louder and more frequent. I pulled the valve covers and seems like ALL the rocker are loose.
I have a hydraulic roller cam and Comp Roller TIP rockers. I set the valves 1000miles ago. I thought I did it right. I also thought those things are not supposed to get loose. I can spin just about every pushrod with ease.
Now that I think about it, it was happening slowly over time. The last 50 miles on the motor didn't feel right.
I adjusted the valves hot doing the spin the pushrod method.
Any comments or suggestions?

mr 4 speed Apr 16th, 00, 6:20 PM If you don't have screw in studs(I'm assuming you do,roller cam and all)you're studs must be pulling out-if you do have screw in studs, can't help you.good luck
blorenz1 Apr 16th, 00, 6:36 PM Someone else may be able to add more information, but what kind of pushrods are you using? If I remember correctly, a roller cam retrofit requires the use of special length pushrods.
David Nafarrete Apr 16th, 00, 6:50 PM Here is more info on my setup
SB400 retro fit Hyd Roller cam, vertical lock lifters
Heads are Edelbrock RPMs. Screw
in studs and guide plates. Using the Edelbrock Valves and related equip. Just added the Comp rockers to them.
Pushrods are Manley (.100 longer) hardened as recommended by Comp Cams.
IgnitionMan Apr 16th, 00, 7:05 PM Did you use Poly-Loks? Stock jamb nuts are a one-shot, on direction only deal.
To lock the Poly-Lok down correctly, don't just tighten the jamb crew in the top of the nut after you get the perload set, figure a bit of Lok body rotation, and using both the Allen wrench and your Lok boxed end wrench, tighten BOTH the screw AND Lok nut at the same time. This ensures the nut will stay where you put it.
If you try to just jamb the screw, it won't get tight enough to stay where you leave it, it will back off.
David Nafarrete Apr 16th, 00, 7:51 PM I used the ones that came with the rockers. Stock type I am sure. So I should buy new nuts. Any specific brand?
Ignitionman, the kind of nuts you are refering to with the allen head I am not familiar with. I am only familiar with the stock nuts. Can I use that kind with my rockers?
Thanks for the help
Dave
Steve R Apr 16th, 00, 8:29 PM Poly locks are sort of like using double nuts, except instead of having the nuts in tandem the nut is long and has an allen inside that is tightend to the top of the stud. Mr. Gasket sells them for about $25, make sure you know what size stud you have, bring in one of your current rocker arm nuts to use as a refrence.

JWA Apr 17th, 00, 12:40 AM I had that happen on my BBC and I went to the local NAPA and replaced the "one shot" nuts with new ones and did not have anymore problems. However, stepping up to the poly locks would definitely be better. IgnitionMan Apr 17th, 00, 10:15 AM If you go the Poly-Lok route, make sure the tops of the rocker studs are ground flat, and don't have the manufacturing ridges in them. The Poly-Loks won't work right without flat topped studs.
David Nafarrete Apr 17th, 00, 4:37 PM Do you mean I have to remove the rocker studs and grind them flat or do they make flat ones? I have Edelbrock heads. Are mine flat?
The Crane Cool Nuts say they are counterbored for bottle necked studs. Will those work?
Thanks for all the help guys
Dave

Doug F. Apr 17th, 00, 6:04 PM Don't know specifically about the Edelbrocks, but all ARP rocker studs are ground flat on the top so the polylocks don't loosen. Don't grind them flat if they aren't. I would guess almost for sure the Edelbrocks are ok. Just look at the top of the studs and see if they are flat.
Fine69 Apr 17th, 00, 6:47 PM You can remove and grind the ones you have or ARP makes both so be specific. The flat tops are listed for roller rockers.
