Where is no. 1 on the distributor cap on a 1984 454 engine? Thanks.

Has the distributor been removed and reinstalled? If not then I'll give it a try:

My diagram did not travel well.

If the diagram doesn't travel the NET very
well, heres a description: The wire connections to the dist cap should be facing the master cylinder. Counting from the connection, go to the left (clockwise) 3 terminals. This is #1. It should be just to the left rear of the carburetor (throttle body).

If the distributor has been removed, there is a very specific procedure to reinstall it in the correct place. If not followed, number 1 could be anyplace.
Hope this makes sense.

Hey guys how do you get back to #1 if the distributor has been removed? Thanks.

You have to find TDC. Bump the engine until the timing mark appears on the balancer. Now you're either on or 180 degrees off. To check, I'd pull the valve cover and make sure both valves on #1 are closed. If you're not sure, turn it over again and watch the movement of the valves.

The you can place the ditributor in annd start wiring. You'll have to line up the oil pump drive with the distributor. I've always used a biga#$ screwdriver. Keep in mind the helix on the cam gear when you set this up. The distributor will turn an 1/8 turn or less when you drop it in.

Make sure the distrib rests directly on the intake ,amifold, the the oil pump drive and cam gear are all engaged. Then, you're good to go.

Instead of pulling vavle cover I pull the number 1 spark plug and while someone bumps the motor over with the starter I hold my thumb over the plug hole. When the piston comes up on the compression stroke I know I am coming up on TDC. Good luck

I agree with Jeff. Have someone slowly bump the engine over with the starter, when you feel the compression building stop and rotate by hand to TDC on the balancer. Then drop the distributor in and where the rotor is pointing need to be #1.

Maybe it's all the overlap we used to run in our cams, but I could never feel the "poof" real well. To me, the valves are alot easier and idiotproof. ( which I need lots of)

Always our pleasure to help, Beverly.

Ah yes, a great day, another rat motor lives on !!!

For anyone using a screwdriver to line up the oil pump drive, follow Gene's advice and use a BIG, LONG screwdriver. Not many things worse than trying to fish a screwdriver out of the distributor hole. If you have a pre-oiler, use that instead.
