What ALL needs to done to convert the factory system over to 134? I've heard that perhaps the POA valve is not compatible with 134? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Unless you have a particular problem, I would recommend that you keep it R12.

R134 isn't as efficient as R12, so even if you get it to work, it might not cool as good as you'd expect. R134 systems usually have bigger evaporators to make up for this.

The previous advice is good. One thing to remember is the system on your Chevelle is to large (plumbing) for the swap. R134 is designed to run in a much smaller system such as those found in newer cars. R134 does not cool as good as R12 either. The temps taken at the vents in 67 Elcamino cools quicker and colder than my wifes 93 Park Ave http://www.chevelles.com/forum/cool.gif

Jimmy,

When I had my 87 MC SS serviced at the local Chevy Dealer I asked about converting and they said don't. They also said that the R134 would not work well in it. Cost for a inspect/recharge(R12) was 75 bucks.

the A6 compressor in 69 run on cycle times to cool the newer 134 systems have compressors that run continuosly unless you have a problem stay with R12 if not use freeze 12 works great in A6 compressors.

I put 134R in my 70 and it cools better than the R12. All I did was change the o-rings on the back of the compressor. I run a vacuum pump on the system for about 30 min. then put 1 can of 134 oil then 2 cans of coolant. It is a lot cheaper than R12 and works the great

i have been told by numerous ac shops that they tend to have a bunch of extra leaking problems after this conversion since it's actually "thinner" than the r12
just what i heard.
