I've got a 69 ss396 w/ac & a 5500 rpm tach.
would this be a 325 or 350 horsepower engine.
any other ideas? the block had been milled
before I got the car.Thanks

It could be either one. Both had 5500 rpm redlines. The 375HP had 6500 rpm redline.

One big item I didn't mention is this an

375 HP engines were not available with AC, so it narrows it down to the 325 HP or 350 HP.

Okay, I have a 69 SS with a 6000 RPM redline. What is the story on this one? My car also had a lot of other weird incorrect stuff such as El Camino body mounts.......

In '69 the L78 and L72 cars got the 6000 rpm redline tach.

Didn't know that, Keith. Learn something every day. Can't say that I've seen a 375HP without a 6500 tach. Was this a 69 only thing? Maybe I havn't paid enough attention to tachs. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

What the heck is a L72 ?
I thought just 3 motors were offered,L35-325
hp, L34-350 hp,& L78-375 hp, Nobody has really told me if you could get 350 hp car
w/ac(I read somewhere that the 350 horse
motors came w/forged crank & fittings for a
engine oil cooler(located above oil filter)
Has anybody heard of that ?

The L-72 was the 427/425 engine installed in the Vette and Big Cars. Too bad it wasn't put in the Chevelles. It was the same as the L-78 except it was 427CI. Both had rectangle intake ports, aluminum intake, 11:1 compression, solid lifters, forged cranks, Holley 4-Bbl and 4-bolt main blocks. Only the 4-bolt main blocks had the fittings for the oil cooler. As far as I know A/C was not available on these engines.

Yes, A/C was available on the 325 and 350HP engines. These were 2-bolt main blocks, no fittings for the oil cooler, hydraulic lifters, 10.25 comp, oval intake ports and Q-jet carb. Most 350 HP had forged cranks but I have seen originals with cast cranks. 325HP had cast cranks.

Hope this helps. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

The L72 is the 427-425 hp engine installed in the COPO Chevelles and Camaros. Our COPO Chevelle has the 6000 rpm red line tach.
