: 275/60's on a 70' rear. What is min/max offset
chev-hell Jul 28th, 99, 2:42 PM buying a set of used weld wheels and need to know quickly what the offset would need to be to be able to put 275 60's on the rear of my 1970. i have seen from 4" to 5.5" on 8" rims and im a little confused since these are soo wide i would assume it's pretty close. thanks jk

L6571SS Jul 28th, 99, 4:10 PM Yup those are 275's they are small looking untill you yank them off the car. Sizes vary somewhat from manufacturer to manufacurer so some others may be larger slightly.
Sean- soon I should have a couple new pics they ought to be really good I let y'all know when I get them.

chev-hell Jul 28th, 99, 6:15 PM it is 5.5 offset on these wheels WILL THIS WORK???? roadhugger radials
ron70 Jul 28th, 99, 8:00 PM Guys, I've spent many an hour at this exact section before I purchased my set of rims & tires. It is true you can fit a 275/60/15 under the rear of 70 with a 15 x 8 w/4.5" of backset. What I did was put a 295/50/15 on a 15 x 8.5 w/5.0" backset. No rubs period.
However, every car/frame/rear/exhaust is ever so SLIGHTLY different. "Measure twice cut once". Your shock mounts and exhaust are the 2 greatest fit considerations. Also keep this in mind: stock height/rate springs? This too: Each tire manufacturer has a different rim width requirement; i.e.; a 295/50/15 BFG TA needs only an 8", other tires need 7.5", others need 9.0" to SAFELY locate the bead. Hope my headaches helps someone else.

THORSS70 Jul 28th, 99, 8:56 PM Hi Ron 70,I am also trying to fit 295/50/15 on the rear of my 70 also. I received a few very good suggestions in the wheel tire section. 67 Ratt tells me to use a 5.5 inch backspacing on a 10 inch rim. I will use that advice and let eveyone know how it works so we have a set standard for this combo. Anybody have any pics. of the 70-72 with this rim/tire on it? Will like to know how it looks. I also had 275/60/15's on the same car with the vette 8 inch rim with some rubbing when I put somebody in the rear seat, might want to check the backspacing on each rim you encounter.
DUANE OCHS Jul 29th, 99, 5:53 AM I am currently running B.F. Goodrich TA radials on my car now. 275/60/15 on 8 inch wheels with 5.0 backspacing. I have approx. 1.0 inch of excess space on the inside and outside, or almost perfectly centered with a stock posi rearend. Tires are 28.0 tall. I have had six people in the car and no rubbing at all with stock suspension.
I hope this helps.
ron70 Jul 29th, 99, 6:09 AM Thorss70,
Yes, you PROBABLY could use a 15 x 10 w/ 5.5" of backspacing. You should really closely examine the lower shock mount areas on BOTH sides and the exhaust interference. Also, 2 things additional to consider besides what I mentioned earlier, Sounds trivial, but with a 5.5" backset, where will your wheel weights (if used) sit? With a 5.5" backset on a 15" rim, that lower shock mount is almost on top of the inside edge of that rim. Secondly, if you like to drive your SS, not just look at it, consider new (poly if you like) rear arm bushings to keep things "in order"
THORSS70 Jul 29th, 99, 10:38 AM Hey Ron70 This is the first experience with such a large wheel on this car I will check this out it is something I did not consider. I will be driving the car a whole bunch and was doing a rear end swap real soon and thinking what bushings to use, poly or del-alum from global west. I talked to a guy at the local friday night cruise and he said his poly bushings do not squeak at all like the rumor has it. So I will probably be using those.
chev-hell Jul 30th, 99, 1:32 PM OK here's the scoop they are actually 4" offset so i tried the tires and they fit but they look like they may get shaved if i drive it. Can i cut the lip a little????? without hurting it??????
