Could someone help me out here for a 1969 El Camino. What is the firing order for a 454 engine? Thank You.

1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2, and keep repeating it 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. All mice and rats. 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2.

Correction to Gene's comment - all except for the old BB truck engines that had a gear drive on the cam, then it is reversed.

So Tom, are all Chev V8 distributors interchangeable?

DZAUTO,
I am not really sure, I know I have changed a many points and HEI's and they all swapped both BB & SB. With the old truck motors, I cannot see why they wouldn't work. Just have to reverse the wires (CCW).
I sure someone out there knows for sure!

As for gear drive cams, keep in mind that the distributor will have to turn the oil pump in the same direction as always. I think what Tom is referring to is that the gear must be different to match the reverse rotation cam, but the distributor rotation and firing order will be the same.

This will hurt your head, some boat motors run backward. That means the pump turns backward along with everything else. So, what do you suppose the firing order is for that baby?

Reverse rotation marine motors get some special parts, like camshafts for reverse rotation and drive gears to keep the pump pumping in the correct direction and sometimes they get reverse knurled crankshafts so that the rope seals still keep the oil in. Lotsa possibilities here.

I once knew a guy who had 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 tattooed on the back of his hand. Never did have him work on my cars.
