Recently I purchased a 69 Chevelle SS with a worked 427 engine. The problem I have is there is no room to put on an air filter on it due to the lack of clearance between the carburetor and the stock hood. Should I replace the hood with a cowl inductor hood, if so where would be a good place to purchase one, or should I consider a ram air induction system.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I have a 68 chevelle with a 427 and Edelbrock performer intake and Holley 750 dp. I am able to run a 14inch air cleaner with a 1 1/2 inch element. Granted this doesn't grab as much air as I would like but it does fit. You need an air cleaner with the bottom piece that the outer edge actually sits lower than the carb air horn.

On my 69 Chevelle SS with a 454, I'm currently running a Holley Strip Dominator with the stock hood. The stock air cleaner base allows the use of the standard 4 inch open element air filter without any problem. Typical aftermarket air cleaner bases just don't drop down far enough. If you can find an old original, it may work for you.

Original Big Block open-element air cleaners are still available from GM and many of the vendors. These units sit pretty low, so they might work.

The drop-down air cleaner is AC Delco part "6423907. With 3" tall element, the highest portion of the air cleaner is 2" above the air cleaner base on the carb.

I have a 68 Chevelle SS with the stock SS hood. I have a 396 w/ an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake with a Holley 750 DP. I use a 3" x 14" air filter and base from K&N which fits fine under the hood.

I have a 69 with a 396 and a stock SS hood. With an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake and a Holley Double Pumper and a 1/2" Nitrous Plate, I run a Stock GM type Open Air cleaner with the 3" x 14" dia filter. The Moroso Air Cleaner would not fit, it does not drop down enough.
