I have a 72 chevelle. the VIN# on the car is not legable (rusted).
Is there a VIN# located on the car other than the dash? like on
the frame somewhere??
the car was given to me (owner died), i dont have the registration. PLEASE HELP.

dont know if the engine is original or if the car is an ss although it has ss guages etc. is ther a way to find out what engine came with the car using the production number (b503538)? i found a portion of the build sheet. there is a "DC BS" code in the carb field. also by looking at the bare floors, it appears the car was originally a manual (on the floor) any are there numbers on the tranny that i can match up with the motor? any information would be appreciated

72 - 72=year(1972)
13637 - 1=Division(Chevrolet), 36=Series(Malibu V8), 37=Type(2-door Sport Coupe)
b503538 - b=Assembly plant(Baltimore, MD), 503538=Unit Number, not serial number
704a52 - 704=Trim(vinyl bench), a52-seat(front bench)
sorry..that's all the info I have access to, others will add on.

11 - lower trim color, b - vinyl roof

does the 37 code (malibu v8) mean that it is not a chevelle ss?

No, after '68 all the SS cars are "Malibu V8's" the SS is an option shown on the "build sheet" '68 and prior can be identified by the cowl tag info. In '69 all SS were 396 but later cars have all kinds of engine options and the SS is just more of a trim item option. ON the late models, the build sheet is the only true way of telling. Unless of course you have a bill of sale and something to tie the s/n to it. Sometimes if you have the POP warranty plate, and know where the owner had it serviced with it, they may have some old records showing options. Most states will let you apply for a "lost title" especially if you know the last owners name etc. and a relative will sign off on a bill of sale for $10 or something. Then they will inspect the car, they know where to look, and give you a title if no one challanges ownership. If the dash vin is there and hasn't been tampered with, they will know where to find the alternate and can give you a sticker for the door frame with the vin. Here in AZ that costs 5 bucks for the sticker.
