Here's what you may have to do...

Please post what kind of car, 2-door hardtop, convertible, 4-door sedan etc.

We'll be able to tell you the first part of the vin (body style)
The 2nd half of the vin the assembly plant i.d. and the number(the actual numerical sequence) will hopefully be found by you.

Pop the hood. On the top of the cowl area on the driver's side will be the i.d. plate. Give us those numbers (you may have to clean and scrape).

Then, if it is a small block V-8 engine look behind the alternator right below the valve cover. (you'll have to scrape the grease away). There will be more numbers (hopefully) and they will be correct (unless the engine is not original)These will provide the last part of the vin sequencing # since the engine vin and car vin would have matched.

Good luck! Let us know.

I've seen them on the firewall under the heaterbox,rear package shelf,roof braces.
Your state highway patrol should have the listing of locations for each model year.

dont know if the engine is original or if the car is an ss although it has ss guages etc. is ther a way to find out what engine came with the car using the production number (b503538)? i found a portion of the build sheet. there is a "DC BS" code in the carb field. also by looking at the bare floors, it appears the car was originally a manual (on the floor) any are there numbers on the tranny that i can match up with the motor? any information would be appreciated

trying to construct my vin based on information found. i know the first character should be a 1 but should the second character be a 'c' or a 'd'? the next 2 should be a 37. any clues

First off, I have seen the dash mounted tags so crusted over with debris as to appear to be rusted. If that were the case, I would remove the dash pad and give it a good cleaning.

The build sheet has the VIN on it, if you have those parts.

If the car has the original driver's door and has not been repainted in a manner destructive to it, there is a blue label on the door jamb above the latch that has the VIN.

On top of the frame longitudinal rails there is a VIN.

Under the evaporator box I have found VINs.

Good luck!

Based on your cowl tag
1 = Chev div of GM
3637 = Malibu, 2dr. coupe, 8-cyl
b = Baltimore assy plant
503538 = assy plant seq #
704 = Black vinyl trim
a52 = Bench seat
11 = Antique white lower paint
B = Black vinyl top

Based on this my guess for a VIN would be
1D37F2Bxxxxxx the last six digits are the fisher body seq #.
The fifth digit is the engine code it could be any of the following
F= 307
J = 350 4v carb
H = 350 2v carb
U = 402
W = 454

did you try his old insurance company? they may have a record of it listed under the owners name.
