I have a 70 Malibu convertible with a front bench seat. The underside of the passenger side has a black wire with a rectangular end to accept another wire. The wire connects to the seat at a piece of white plastic. A thin metal strip runs along the seat foam from this piece of plastic to a piece of white plastic at the other end of the strip. The strip is about a foot long. The second piece of plastic is partially under the vinyl seat cover so I can't see where it goes. There is nothing like this on the driver's side and nothing like it at all on the seat of my 70 coupe. It doesn't look like it's for a power seat, so what the heck is it? Thanks for any help.

Just a wild guess.Did your car have a dash light for unbuckled belts?????

That is probably the passanger sensor for the seatbelt warning buzzer. That senses when someone is sitting in the passagner seat. My 73 had a similar setup which was still working when I bought the car. Real annoying, had to yank the buzzer and light out.

I thought that this was for 72, and above. (?) Did they put this in some 70's as well? Maybe just convertibles.
I'm looking at the owner's manual for our long-departed '70 Biscayne. While it is not a Chevelle it is a Chevrolet from '70. In the Instruments section they have a subsection that covers Optional Warning Lights. There are 3 optional warning lights: Low fuel, Check doors, and Seat belts. If memory serves me correctly, the seat belt warning light showed up as standard for '72, and the shrill buzzer was reluctantly added to the mix for '73.
