I'm changing the valve springs on my stock SB heads to match what the new cam recommends. I'm also gonna put them onto a new short block. The heads only have a few thousand miles on them, they were rebuilt, and I used them one summer.

I noticed that there is a lot of gunk on the back side of the intake valves. What's the best way to clean them to re-use? My first thought is a wire wheel, or wire brush on a drill. I'm concerned about hitting the seat area though.... would a wire brush cause damage that would require a valve job or lapping? If so, could I do that myself? I don't want to spend any money on these heads....I'm planning on replacing them with aftermarket ones in a year or 2. Thanks! smile.gif

Ive always used a wire wheel & lapped lightly if no doing a valve & seat grind.

I used a bench mounted wire wheel, no problems at all..

Thanks guys! I didn't want to wire wheel them until I knew it was ok.

Looks like I've got some gunk to clean.... :D
