: How to get posi cheap
JohnC Dec 30th, 98, 10:02 AM I want a posi rearend for my 67 Malibu. Before I plunk down big money for this, any suggestions on how it can be done cheapest; what are my options?
1 Pay lots for a 12 bolt posi
2. Buy an open 12 bolt and convert to posi - about what would this cost? (What about an F body 12 bolt posi? I see these things for sale a lot - how much $$ and work to make it fit?)
3. Ford 9inch - I want to keep the coil spring suspension, so I guess someone (a competent professional) would have to weld on spring perches etc. Anybody know who does this and howmuch going this way would cost?
I've had no luck in the local classified ads and finding a 12 boltposi in the automotive boneyards is like finding the Grandma driven, low mileage, mint condition 70 LS6 Chevelle for sale dirt cheap - I've heard it exists, but will never see it in my lifetime. Thanks
Oh by the way, I'd like to stay around 600 bucks - cheaper if possible.
Big Block Dave Dec 30th, 98, 10:21 AM Grab a welder, and weld your spider gears together...now thats a cheap posi!Ha!
Seriously though, go with the open unit and build it. Thats what I did:
12 Bolt open unit: $250
Auburn Pro-series posi: $335
Richmond 3.73: $135
Installation kit: $100
Assembly: $250
True, this is $1000, but frequently a used 12 bolt posi will cost just as much. If thats too steep for you, you may get lucky on a good used unit for $300-800, but in the scenario I've just described, everything is brand new, for similar $$$$.
Don't bother with an F body unit, and a new or used 9 inch for your car won't come cheap.
P.S don't be shy about picking up a '68 -72 rear for your '67, they have longer axle tubes, but they will fit. I've got a '71 rear in my '67.
Shop around,
Dave

BULKSS Dec 30th, 98, 12:36 PM You can buy a empty case 9inch ford with the coil spring set up in place for about 350
I think its either Reider or Moser who sell them they are usually in the back of magazines MIKE
dude67 Dec 30th, 98, 6:47 PM John,
I bought a 12 open rear off this website for about $300 plus shipping. You have to be willing to do what you want to do. I have 67' chevelle and I want to "go cheap" too. Ausley's Chevelle parts has a posi unit for about $359 with no gears.
Timothy Schlauch Jan 2nd, 99, 2:02 PM I got my 71 chevelle for $300- and it has a 12 bolt pose 3.43's in it, that was a great deal, but maybe you can find a parts car with one in it cheap. GOOD LUCK!!! Tim S
if_6was9 Jan 3rd, 99, 4:29 PM I saw this classified on the web:
2 67 chevelle 12 bolt posi rearends 1 with 4.56 and 1 with 4.11 gears, both excellent condition $750.00 each. Email or call 716-889-5520, Dave Ras@bausch.com. Rochester,NY
I believe it is a recent post.

Satellite Jan 7th, 99, 11:58 AM Timothy Schlauch,
Where do you live to have found such a steal? Never Never Land?
Seriously though-the Auburn equipment really holds its value and I too have found it is less exspensive to build your own.

flywheel Jan 7th, 99, 6:23 PM I've wanted the same thing for my 66. Has anyone used the Powertrax locker units from Summit Racing? Do they hold up? For only $310 sounds to good!!!Friend of mine says they are pretty easy to install?
Johnny O Jan 7th, 99, 6:53 PM If you're going to use the locker for mostly street driving, you probably wont be happy...they're noisy, and not smooth operating...and for 337.00 ( vs. the 310.00) from Jegs, you can buy a torque-line posi unit..or Auburn, for just a little more...John
71ELK Jan 7th, 99, 7:13 PM John C,
I don't think there is a "cheap" route to
getting a 12 bolt posi. (realistic) I
have been looking to replace my 10 bolt
open in my 71 EC for over a year. LUCK
has a lot to do with finding parts that
have been hidden from junk yard mongers
like myself. With the popularity poll rising
on the older chevy's, so is the profit margin. Plan on paying at least 600.00+

carlo Jan 24th, 99, 6:21 PM Don't pay more than $500 for a 12 bolt. They are out there. Talk to people, look at the local papers, and don't rely on the internet. Finding a 12 bolt in Jamaica for a $100 may sound great but be realistic, if you can't drive to where it is don't get it.
I drove 7 hours for a #'s matching 12 bolt that was in great shape, the gear I wanted, for only $400. They're out there, you just have to look.
I wouldn't go the housing/posi/gear/labor route. Be patient and find exactly what you want for the $ you want. You may have to drive 7 hours, but it's worth saving $600 or more
