: Fuel sending unit test?

I finally got my gas tank out for cleaning. I don't think the gas guage has worked as long as I've had the car. When I pulled the sending unit, it appears to be almost new. The float is firm and solid, and even the sock looks like new. The aftermarket sending unit I got with the guage set won't work in the tank, so I have to get a new guage that'll work with the stock sending unit. (Long story  ) Before I spend the money on a new guage AND a new sending unit, is there a way to test the sending unit while it's out of the car?

Yeah, ground it, hook the power cable back up, and move the float around, and have someone tell you if the gauge is working.

Actually you can just put an ohmmeter on it- should vary between 0 and 90 ohms as you move the float.
