I have been running solid roller motors on the street in my last two 396's. They were stock L78's with 11:1 cr, m-21 and 4;10's. They had the same cam shafts. Lift 595I-288 duration and 615E-296 duration. Power range was 3000/6500. Might not have been the best choise but cars ran great. I am building an LS-6 that is all original, standard bore,11:1cr. I would also like to run this as a roller motor. Car will be a 66ss with an M-22 and 4:10 gears. Would this cam be okay figuring this motor will make more torque or wouldn't it matter.

Imho, should run GREAT in the bigger motor but you won't need to rpm it quite as much due to the stroke increase..

AND I know there are a whole bunch of guys here that know alot more about this then me!! So please jump right in guys...

What are you looking for with regards to specific use/perfomance that's what will/should dictate your cam profile. That info will make it easier to recommend possibilities.

Car is only street driven. Just was curious if there was a better choice in cams.

Not trying to be a Smart @@@ but there are as many "better choices" as there are cam grinders! But that grind (which i'm not familair with) in a factory configured SHP Application 454, it would still perform very well. However, with the larger dispalacement and stroke an increase in duration would improve it significantly, something around or slightly higher 600/620 lift with 290/300 duration. If you have the cash try inc your duration. I have a Reed custom grind in a 468 Nova, 2950lbs, PG, 488, with 10.5 that is awesome and I put the same cam in a 461 for a father/son project 69 Chevellee 4 Speed 411 their's is very similiarly configured to the orig LS-6 450/460 HP and they Drag it nearly every week end and drive it to their local hang out's on Rod nights. Any way it's ground at 624I/634E-288I/300E and as I said it's on the Money. Now I'm running a Victor .jr, 950 Da Vinci & DART 320's with mine but it was orig conf with 188's, and a 800 Holley Vac sec.

How tough would it be on the springs? Where could I purchase it. The Crane runs $340.00. Money isn't an issue.

Thanks'

Reed specifically grinds a series of sticks which are "easier" on valve components but you would need to assure your springs & retainers accomodate. If you check www.reedcams.com (http://www.reedcams.com) you can get a real good idea how they design their cams and if you think you'd like to find out specifics about your particular application call em.' You can buy as much or as little from them as you'd like, (meaning springs, retainers, locks, roller lifters etc... ) as you might have access to more cost effective components to match your grind.

Herbert cams I feel, is a well kept secret. Chet Herbert is the "Father" of the modern Roller Cam. Doug Herbert is the sole distributor of Herbert Cams and is one of the best Wholesale performance part distributors. They will also do custom work for additional cost, which is about half of Reeds or a basic manufactures price. Their @ www.herbertperformance.com (http://www.herbertperformance.com) .

It can be incredibly frustrating but also a real grabber to configure your own Power Plant. Considering how much your Ride is worth to you it might be a good idea to let a Custom Grinder help you through the process and unlke 99% of Rodders you'll have a cam that maximizes your HP and performance..
