: Why build a 327?
jeffc Feb 15th, 04, 5:46 PM I'm looking at pricing for pistons and such for a 327 and I just can't come up with a reason not to have my mains ground down and stroking it to a 350. Piston cost is about half. Am I missing something here with my logic?
onick Feb 15th, 04, 5:59 PM 327 will wind up quicker :D
Put in a 283 crank and make it a 302! Very quick wind up, and high rpm's.
But then again.. if you are looking for cube's get a 350 or BB.

pdq67 Feb 15th, 04, 8:38 PM Everybody is right here, imho!!
A 350 equals more torque due to cubes.
A 327 is a Dandy motor, and imho, the best GM made.
And the 302 will rev to the moon AND need tires and gearing to help it out!! BUT up top, it is a BLAST!! The best road-race motor going!!
Take your pick... I've had all three AND loved my junk 301 b/c I liked to beat on her to 7,000 and above whenever I got the chance..
Of all my motors, the 406 has the most grunt, but it should!! Kinda lazy wrapping up due to the long stroke, but what the hey, she pulls and pulls!!

04S396S Feb 15th, 04, 9:25 PM Ya'll have convinced me into keeping the 327 when I build up my 496 stroker....Maybe after college I will have a Chevy II with my 327 to accompany my chevelle in the garage. tongue.gif

Watching Bill Jenkin's Chevy II/327 whipping the Hemis, Rats, and big Fords in '66-68, and then his Vega/327 putting the hurt to the entire Pro Stock field at the '72 Winter Nats might put a different light on the subject had you been there.

jeffc Feb 16th, 04, 8:45 AM I'm really talking about price here. Heck, if I had enough money to buy 302 pistons, I wouldn't even associate with you people :D :D
JohnnieV Feb 16th, 04, 9:11 AM Go with the 327 over the 350.Good high rpm pull. The more you abuse it the better it runs
Greybeard Feb 16th, 04, 2:02 PM Only the Rich can afford to buy cheap!
When I look at "no name" pistons @ $85 a set, I wonder if they were cast in a clay mold in Indonesia and finished on a pedal powered lathe.
When I look through the Summit catalog I see piston for 327s and 350s pretty much the same price. Some 327 pistons are $20 more, some are $40+ less for the same manufacturer.
As I have a 45 year history of beating on an engine pretty hard, I've come to a point where it's cheaper to buy the right parts and avoid "pan failures".
jeffc Feb 16th, 04, 2:44 PM Who the heck is talking about cheap? TRW forged for the 327 are $40/each and for a 350 they are $27/each.
Doesn't matter though, just bought a 305 crank and took it in to have the mains shaved...
pdq67 Feb 16th, 04, 6:40 PM Greybeard,
I hear you but my junk 301 had W/JCW's finest $39 set of 1/8" over 283's with 1/8" tall, half round pop-up el-cheapo, cast pistons in it along with the little-bitty 11/32" rod-bolts and held up fine for as many times that I took it above 7,000rpm to clean the oil off the plugs after my wife dogged it around town for a week..
But that was probably b/c of the chrome rings I ran in her as well as the old, I think -520, heads I ground h-ll out of??

I think that was always the most popular way to clean the plugs on a 283.

ddeennis Feb 16th, 04, 11:16 PM i'm king cheap.......the cheaper the better.......maybe one of these days my engines will fail but still waiting for the day......13 years plus and more engines i can remember that i have built. still have not toasted one........maybe im not trying hard enough.........stock bottom end 350 small blocks with cheap 100 dollar claimer 11 to 1 pistons running 7000 rpms....and stock bottom end bbc running 7200 rpms with cast pistons.........shall the day come, im waiting..........if its not free or cheap i dont use it........lol
Clyde_Maston Feb 17th, 04, 9:09 PM I just put a matched set of flat top $80 Federal Mogul Sealed power cast pistons from Advance in my 327. The quality looked great and the mic on them was perfect. According to some, as long as you keep the piston speed below 4000 fps, cast pistons are supposed to be plenty capable. I believe that that works out to around 8000 rpm in the 3.25" stroke 327. Why waste money on forged when hypers or cast will do the trick?
