: Valve Cover Leak

Just put gaskets on and once engine starts seem to be getting allot of oil "smoke" coming off of the exhaust just beyond the manifold. Too tight or should I have used some of that "glue" gunk they talk about? Just seems to be on the passenger side exhaust side right now. I pulled the cover off after I first saw the smoke and put it back on again but its still smokng but not as bad now....

make sure you didn't "dimple' the cover by over-tightening it. Use a straight edge to make sure. Are you using any kind of load spreader ? Did you clean the surfaces before installing the gaskets. You may use an adhesive to "tack" the gaskets to the valve covers. All you should need is a good clean surface for the gasket to head mating. Also, gaskets thickness varies. Lastly, the screws needs to be snug...not super tight.

Did everything you mentioned and I have the load spreader's all the way around....I believe I may have gotten it too tight and possibly "bent" the back end of the cover and that would account for the leakage.
So maybe I better check the back end to see if it is slightly bent. Thanks for the info.

Little tip I do on all my valve cover gaskets.

After you're sure the valve covers are straight, I run a bead of RTV on the valve cover. Following directions as to time to let it tack up, put the gasket on the cover and line it up. I then use a light coating of grease (wheel bearing works fine) on the other side of the gasket, and install it on the head. Grease coating seals OK, and stops the gasket from sticking to the head, so when you remove it next time, it stays on the valve cover, and is easily reusable without any leaks. My .000002

I was having problems getting gaskets to seal also. Used a lot of the "Tricks" I read about but never could get them to seal.

I recently got some of the reusable felpros and they work great. checked cover for flatness and installed dry. Even come with new extra wide load spreaders. They recently came down in price (under 20$ at a local "high price" parts store, must be giving them away at summit).
