I have just finished rebuilding my 350 and got it back into the car. The problem that I am having is that I cannot turn the crank to line up the torque converter or set the timing. Want i want to know is, is there a way that I can do that or is there a tool for that. All help is appreciated.

Thanks

I paid the extra $$$, and bought the longer head dampner bolt. Take the plugs out, use your breaker bar and turn the Harmonic balencer. I also bought the coolest flexplate turner from Leslie. It is so simple. You could make one. It's 2 small blocks on a 10" handle. they are spaced apart wide enough to slip over the edge of the flex plate. When you pull down, they bind the flexplate and make it turn.
Here's the link where I bought mine.

There is a tool that grips the teeth of the ring gear to turn the flywheel; very handy they are. And you might be able to tap your starter to do this job, too.

If you have the balancer off, there is also a socket that fits over the crank snout and aligns with the woodruff key...lets you turn the engine both ways. Example at http://shop.store.yahoo.com/gofast/cranshafturs.html but I'd bet most cam mfgs have them and maybe even Mr. Gasket. ?

If you have the balancer on, bolt up a balancer puller and use a pry bar or even a 1/2" drive breaker bar between two of the three bolts.

If you have the spark plugs in, remove them for less resistance. Then get a rag and grab it and growl.

Another simple tool is to have someone or yourself make a steel plate (1/8"thickness) that will bolt up using the holes in your balancer where your front pulley attaches, and weld a 1" nut to the center of the plate and remove your sparkplugs and turn all you want from the front of your engine using a wrench.
