I installed the holley rebuild qjet today and got all hooked up. The car needed quite a bit of adjustment and idle speeded up to run good. In all idle in park was left at 950-1000 and this gave a decent idle in drive of 650-750 and gave 9.5 in vacuum at idle, a 1 in. improvement. I would have liked a higher idle but this is where I left it alone.

Because, I installed the air cleaner and got in to go for a drive to check the 71/41 jet/rod combo. Only problem though was the accel was locked. Got out and looked and yep, throttle was being blocked by the dropped base. The carb was a later model 170xxxx and had a higher throttle lever than my 702xxxx carb. I went ahead and drove around the block with no air cleaner and it was crisp at part throttle so the 71/41 was really close, but idle was still not good to me.

But to make a long story short, I had to take the carb back since the linkage could not be changed and the parts store wasn't interested in ordering another to see if I could get the correct linkage that would work. Therefore, I am back to step 1. I know now a 71/41 drives really good, but now not sure what carb to get. I checked with Autozone and they say carbs are jetted for a specific application, so they never know what carb will show up, only what jet size it is. I won't order carb after carb to get the right one, just don't have the patience nor does the parts stores.

So this is my last resort, either find a good qjet guy to rebuild mine for my combo, or hang my head in defeat and buy a holley since everyone I have spoke to about it says that is the way I should go with my 454. But not sure I want to give up that 1-2 mpg since I am only getting 7.5 on last tank.

So here are my specs. Gene has already told me about one guy but wanting other sources or opinions. Remember this is a 80% street/ 20% strip car that is my daily driver of 55 miles a day.

Sounds like you are happy with the Holley reman Qjet except that it has the later style throttle arm & you want it to idle higher correct?

What year is your car -66? Throttle cable or rod?

I've had good experience just drilling a hole slightly lower on the arm. If that doesn't work for you you can bend your own throttle rod out of 1/4" rod and thread the end. One last option would be to put a couple of air cleaner to carb gaskets under the aircleaner till you get the clearance you need.

Once you are there we can work on the idle.

Kerry I cant picture this in my mind, but cant you drill another hole and then use a cut off wheel ( wrap the whole carb in saran wrap) to dress the top down?

BTW, I ususally start at 72/41 or thereabouts.

Anyway, regardless of the hassle of it all, you're gaining!I'd send your other big carb to Tom T. and have him do her right.

I guess I didn't explain what was actually wrong. The throttle arm or control on the carb itself that the accel. rod hooks to stood to high. The rod did not interfere but arm itself on the carb stood too high and hit the air cleaner base. The holes for the accel rod was fine, but I did thik about cutting on part of the carb arm, but would have required cutting approx 1 1/2 inch on the carb arm itself to make it short enough to clear.

I can't run any spacers because the air cleaner is right about 1/4 inch from the hood and the air cleaner hold down stud just pokes into the insulation under the hood. If I could afford a cowl hood would be no problem, but with stock flat hood, there just is no room.

I had this same problem with a qjet I used of my brothers that he had built to spec for his motor. It run well also, but was the later model with a tall carb arm and I had to use his non-dropped base air cleaner and no hood to run it.

Gene, waiting on your guy to reply and I believe that is what I am gonna do. This carb really seemed to do well, had good part throttle when I took it for a quick spin. Only the idle system is still not perfect for my car since to get a good idle of 850-900 still required a high idle in park and caused run on when shut off. But big improvement over what I have and now I know what needs to be done.

Tom is a good guy and has been very helpful! He'll get it all squared away for sure.

Kerry, he replied to me last night, but it was late ( shoehorning an engine until 12:30). He must not have copied you. Fire me an email address unless I've given you Tom's already. Just send him an email, tell him that dumbarse over here ( me) never sent his reply to you.

Are the base plates interchangeable from a 170 to 70 series carb?

I bought this drop base from Noah Performance (http://www.noahperformance.com/chromeaircleaner.html) and it clears the linkage on a 170 Qjet and allows plenty of hood clearance on my 67.

The neck has a high lip, where it sits on the carb, to raise the base above the linkage.

USUSALLY not. Most 70 series carbs have the APT in the throttle body. The 170 series carbs have it in the fuel bowl (main body) of the carb. So, if you used a 170 series throttle body and a 70 series fuel bowl, you wouldn't have a way to limit your down travel. And if you had the reverse set up you would have two of them.
