: Whats the proper way to install studs?

A buddy of mine has some misc stud kits for the oil pan, oil pump, carb, manifolds etc. I can take them for free and use them, the only problem is I dont know how to install them properly. I would guess you tighten the nut to the end of top threads using it to drive the bottom threads into the block/manifold. Is this the correct procedure, or is there some kind of specialty tool to use? Also, what type of adhesive do I use on the threads to prevent the stud from coming loose, if any?

Two nuts, tightened together.

Loctite couldn't hurt on those important studs, like the oil pump, heads, etc.

After you've tightened the stud down, index it with a small piece of chalk, or a black felt pen on the tip of it will work. Make sure the stud doesn't move when you torque down the nut- if you over torque a stud you can crack the boss it's screwed into.

Which would be a massive pain if it happened to be your rear main bearing cap.
