I know this has nothing to do with Chevelles. But I was putting together a go kart engine for fun with my brother. We wanted to make it more high performance, so we did a little at home port job on the intake valve and we advance the cam shaft timing by one. The engine started great in one pull and we let it warm up a bit. Now we really want to get serious by making it even more high performance. Any thoughts?? Thanks in advance.

you might find what you need in a jegs catalog. they have cams, high compression heads ,ect. ect. hope that helps.

This sounds like a serious "small block" engine!! Advancing the cam may be the wrong move , as the high rpm world really likes the late inlet valve closing of a retarded cam. I suggest finding a way to measure the performance of your car and using that info to help you tune it.Maybe g-tech meter would be useful??

What kind of motor is it? What you do is mill about .80 off the head, best if you use clay to measure the valve's, just to make sure. This will work on a briggs 5-hp, but it's hard as hell to start.

Yup, mill the head, find a carb off a bigger engine. You can mill the head with a piece of glass and a sheet of sandpaper. Put the sandpaper on the glass and rub the head surface across it. The Briggs engines have about a 6;1 compression ratio so there is a lot of room for improvement. You can get 10 HP out of these engines pretty easy, may not last long. Run a straight pipe for exhaust. No more power, lots more fun. tom

Well since reading this i have taken 1 of my snowblowers out (engine seased on it) and have started to rip it apart piston and valves are all in good shape so i think i spun the crank if so gonna get it all running again might go .10 over and do some head work damn thing will shoot snow 50 feet in first gear when i am done.
update: so much that plan took starter off and found that the block is crackes looks like rod broke from crank and it went into the block gonna find a new block now i guess

this is all great but I mean this is a simple horizontal crank 2 horse engine. We did a real serious port job on the intake and intake valve only. Now were trying to figure out what we can do at HOME without ordering parts. Like the port job was done at home. Can or should we drill a little notch in the crank? or run a motorcycle muffler? or install an aditional oil thrower
? Thanks again

milling the head will give the highest hp return, for the money this should cost less than $20 if that.
