I have a 1967 chevelle with a 1976 chevy 400 motor. I have a problem starting when it gets hot only. It starts on 1/2 turn when cold. I have read several postings on this topic and already installed a remote solenoid. I turned my timing back and it starts a little better but I sacrafice on performance and it doesnt run real well. I even put pipe insulation (Temporary) thinking it was vapor lock. My buddy ( A ford guy) says my engine compartment is getting too hot and my Edelbrock 600 cfm carb gets warm and is heating my fuel. No I didnt beleive him either. Thanks in advance

Can yoy explain the exact simptoms. When you have the problem does the motor turn over at all ??? Most hot start problems are a result of the starter not doing anything when you turn the key.
I don't think it's vapor lock if the starter does engage.

Warren, I think what Bill means is that electric motors, when they get old, get weird
as they heat up. Your starter is just a big electric motor.
What this does to a car is it will crank fine when cold but after you run it for 30 minutes or so and shut it off it cranks much more slowly and doesn't want to start.
Is this a good description of your problem?

Warren,
You must have headers right. That is a big problem with headers. If you don't insulate the starter the heat from the header will slowly kill your starter. If you put a new starter it will fix your problem for a couple of years then you will have the same problem again. The heat just wears out the bushes on the starter and makes them fail sooner than they should.I have seem this on Big Blocks and Small Blocks.

Good Luck,
George

Thanks for al the info guys. I dont think its my starter as I just replaced it 2 months ago and it turns over real well when hot, its just my motor does not want to fire. And yes I do have headers, (Cheap, not ceramic coated ones at that).I still think it might be a timing problem and it does get real hot underneath my hood. Vapor Lock?? or bad gas ?? Thanks again for all the help as I really love this car.

i have the SAME EXACT problem, edelbrock 600,cheapy headers, and a NEW starter, turns fine but just won't start. i do believe i need some header wrap, it's next on my list. 307 w/cam headers intake/carb combo. Timed correct. just turns over and over and over. it's gotta be the heat because my car runs 205-210 on the highway and 200 round town (w/ new custom 3 core radiator) and damn it's hot under the hood.
