: cam for 283
gotta be chevy Jan 14th, 05, 10:04 PM Am currently building a 67 283 to put in my 65 el camino. Will be giving this car to my daughter for her 16th birthday. The block is bored .040. We're looking at using a set of 305 heads. Do have the 283 heads but they aren't anything special, plus they would need hardened seats and guides more then likely. Will be running a performer intake with probably a 500 edelbrock??? Motor will be hooked to a stock th350. Running headers with 3.08 rear gears. Can anybody give me a good cam choice for this setup? Wanting good fuel mileage with mild performance.
Thanks,
Tim
Adman Jan 14th, 05, 11:16 PM the crower beast cam is decent. I have it in my car, and it has decent pick up. The only difference is that I have a PG and 3.55s, but im sure it will have enough for her anyways with the th350 (the first gear is nice smile.gif )
daveseitz Jan 14th, 05, 11:36 PM Stay towards the stock replacement or next step up RV cams. That motor will really start getting choppy with a small cam. Added a young girl behind the wheel with to much power and ouch. Look at Comp/Crane/Lunati whoever and stay conservative.
gotta be chevy Jan 15th, 05, 12:49 AM Thanks so far for the info. We had first thought about using the 268 comp cam, but since doing some researching think this would be to much cam. Leaning more toward the 252 comp-206/206 at .050 and .425/.425 lift or the crane energizer 260H-204/204 at .050 and .427/.427 lift. What do ya'll think.
Thanks
Tim
pdq67 Jan 15th, 05, 1:29 AM Go with the 204 cam!!
AND I honestly figure the Crane 266/266 Energizer is about the max for your application!!
BUT I will say, the little motor will run like a "scalded dog" with no more then an old, -097 Duntov solid in it if you get your CR. up to as close to 10 to 1 that you can get it!! It would have ta be rolled outta the hole with the 3.08's, but once up around 2500/3000 rpm hold on!!

Adman Jan 15th, 05, 2:43 AM You and that duntov cam, just love that in the 283's, but you need gear/stall to back that cam up. th350/3.08 is gonna be sluggish out of the hole, maybe a munce and 4.11s smile.gif
pdq67 Jan 16th, 05, 12:09 AM Adman,
That's just how I ran my junk 301 years ago with the little old Duntov cam in my '67 Camaro SS/RS it b/c of my M-20, 3.31's and 26.5" tall tires!!
It was my daily driver for a couple of years!
AND I have dumped the clutch at 5000rpm and it still didn't go much better UNTIL it hit about 3000rpm... But I loved rowing through the gears up to above 7000...

northern 396 Jan 16th, 05, 10:45 AM I had a 283 in a '58 Corvette that I owned for more than twenty years. It had a great sounding lumpy idle. Combined with a close ratio T-10, it had incredible acceleration for a 283. I spent the first year or two doing my best to destroy the engine. After that, I treated it with more respect and appreciated how great it ran. A GM mechanic in Vancouver had put it together before I bought it.
Regarding the cam, I was told that it was a "350 cam." I never had to open the engine to find out exactly what that meant.
gotta be chevy Jan 16th, 05, 5:13 PM Got my engine kit ordered thru Northern. The cam that comes with the kit is I think the 300hp 327 cam. Specs are: 390/410 lift with 1.5 rockers, 194/202 dur. at .050 with 112 lobe sep. Will this work good with my motor? Am going to run the 601 305HO heads. I've already got a good holley 600, am planning on giving it a try before springing for a new 500 edelbrock. Will this cam work better for me then the crane energizer 260 and or the 266. Remember, this is for my 16 yr. old daughter.
benaround Jan 17th, 05, 12:42 AM The cam in that kit may be for a 300hp 327, but that would also be the stock cam for your 283. To the best of my knowledge, every 265, 283, & 307 under 230hp, as well as every 327, 350, & 400 under 320hp built between the late fifties and the late nineties had that .390/.410 as their stock cam. I vote for the Comp 252. That 097 Duntov would be perfect for a '57 Chevy permanently parked in a museum.
novadude Jan 17th, 05, 9:41 AM Crane 260H sounds good. You do not want a Duntov cam in a car that your daughter will drive, as it will just be a dog in the lower RPM range (I am assuming your daugther will not be buzzing it to 7000 rpm).
Even the stock "929" cam that comes with your kit would be just fine. '929' cam, performer intake, small tube headers, and a 500-600 cfm carb will make for a nice "peppy" street engine with a TH350 and 3.08s, and it will get great MPG.
pdq67 Jan 17th, 05, 11:45 AM You can use either of Summit's cam and lifter kits for about $80 plus S&H.
SUM-K1102, (194/204 - almost the stock, -929 cam), or SUM-K1103, (204/214 - the Performer cam)..
Imho, VERY good value for the BUCK!!
