: bbc long to short water pump conversion question

I am considering converting my 396 from a long water pump to a short water pump. The reason for the conversion is to provide more room for fans etc (67 chevelle).

I know I will need all new pulleys (crank and water pump) and brackets (alt and power steering).

My question - will I also need a new power steering pump? I know in 67 they had the remote resevoir and what I have now is the later model with the resevoir attached to the pump.

Thanks

The powersteering pump itself is the same... You can use your current one and maybe modify (bend?) the lines to fit. The outer (tin) reservoir canister is different, but it interchanges with most GM pumps from the 60's through the 90's...

The reason for the remote reservoir pump, is that on a Chevelle with the short water pump and alternator on the drivers side, the steering box is right below the pump... The pump has to be up higher to clear the box, but it can't come in because of the engine block. This doesn't leave room to access the fill cap (blocked by the alternator).

You can get an aftermarket pump(different GM) and bracket setup (also remote reservoir), but these are probably just as pricey (and maybe more $$) as getting the correct setup...

thanks Tony (smokin cool car by the way - I dig the dual quad set up)
That clears it up. I didn't think about not being able to get to the cap. doh!

Sorry, but this part still confuses me
"The outer (tin) reservoir canister is different, but it interchanges with most GM pumps from the 60's through the 90's..."

I guess I haven't looked at it close enough or maybe I'm just reading it wrong...but I assumed the resevoir and pump (on my 69 style-not a correct 67) is one piece.

Not that it matters at this point...more curios than anything.

If money was not an issue (when isn't it?) I would consider one of HOTRODSRJ's Concept One Pulley set ups. It comes with an aftermarket PS pump and remote resevoir. Very sweet.
