is there an ez way to tell if i need a valve job or a complete rebuild i have a 307 that was beefed up a little but the fella didn't know that this car was running hot all the time since he didn't have a temp guage (just an idiot light) once i got it home and put guages on it i found it running 220-230 so i had to have a custom radiator made for it and it now runs 180 but it uses oil and i see smoke (very light) even in idle after it warms up or at start up out both pipes and pretty even on both sides plugs are pretty evenly coated with oil but very lightly. it uses about a qt. every 400 miles if i drive it at high rpm, 70 on the highway all the way with a th350 tranny. any idea's????

Harley's right, sounds like a rebuild. Nows a good time to beef it up..

chev-hell,
are you loosing any trans.fluid? My 283 was doing the same, started to rebuild when a friend said to check the modulator valve on trans.(pull off vacuum hose after motor cools)look for trans. fluid to drip.that quart every 400 miles could be a gasket leak. If it is not the modulator it is probably loose pistons(BUMMER) good luck.

As a high miles 307 owner I can tell you that the cost of a rebuild is about that of a crate 350 or a rebuilt 350 core. Every SBC owner wishes it was the guides but as my mechanic, who knows chevy motors like he knows his wife, told me: if it smokes it's rings.

By the way, what could you possibly do to a 307 to beef it up... I added a 4bbl and ran with out the Y-pipe and didn'y get all that much power.
