Since rebuilding my 65 I've lost the formula for the alternator bracket alignment. My original 283 (65,000 miles) got new edelbrock manifold & carb, new short waterpump etc. and headers. The alternator pulley sits about an inch and half too far forward to work with the upper brackets sold to fit the car. The lower is OK with the header adaptor but I Rube Goldberged some spacers for the upper and its never been right. Throws belts, and just plain looks bad. Now the vibration has broken the lower mount. I have the funny feeling I'm doing something really stupid. I'm missing something. Any ideas? The 65 alternator mounts upper drivers side.

are you sure you don't need the long water pump?

Ive got a 65 283 in my shop on an engine stand. It still has the manifolds with the alternator brackets in place, if you need me to make any measurements I would be happy to do it. Sounds like the header bracket is for a long water pump.

Thanks folks. I went out and spent the afternoon trying to look at it fresh and solved the problem. I had been attaching the upper bracket to the manifold lug and spacing out the alternator. When I moved the bracket down to attach to the water pump bolt it lined up perfectly. Just had to shim it out slightly. I have been fighting that for six months. Well I was right about one thing I was doing something stupid. See it does help to talk about your problems!!
