Ok, ive been trying to hunt down a stupid oil leak i have down by my fuel pump for way too long now.. it's on a pre 77 350 4 bolt block.

I was just watching that area while my car idled and i noticed oil coming from a bolt hole? there are two threaded holes basically in line with the fuel pump on the front of the engine.. i saw oil spitting out of the top hole.. why the hell is oil coming from there? Oil pressure is fine and all.. so is this some hole that was meant for something that is supposed to be blocked off? help?

Isn't that the hole that is there to help keep the fuel pump rod "in place", when re-installing a new fuel pump? Should be able to throw some teflon tape and/or silicone sealant on the bolt and plug it back up.......I'm sure somebody will correct me if I'm wrong..... :D

Put a short bolt in the hole that is leaking oil. Put a little non hardening Permatex type sealer on the threads and screw it in. Too long of a bolt will contact the fuel pump rod and it won't be good.

The top hole on the passenger side should have a SHORT bolt installed in it. As was mentioned, when changing the fuel pump, a longer bolt can be installed in the hole FINGER TIGHT to hold the pump push rod in place while installing the pump.

Jinks,
Just want to repeat the caution ... make sure the threads on the bolt you use are no more than 1/2" long or they will contact the fuel pump pushrod and you will wish you still had your oil leak

What timing, I just read about that bolt hole leaking in the August 2004 Hot Rod Magazine (page 142) but you already know the answer. They explain it pretty well.
