has anyone thought of the 572 crate engine in an a body?

i was wondering about this with fuel injection making it more driveable. just the thought of 600+ hp on tap, with everyday driveability and gm reliability scares me......thats why it would be cool!

i have been saving for a loooooooong time to "reconstruct" my 69. just a thought.

I wouldn't mind having one in my '71 if someone is willing to fork over $13k for me.

(That's for the 720 hp version might I add. ;) )

Except the installed cost won't be 13K it will be closer to 23K by the time you upgrade the chassis, trans, rear, driveshaft, cooling system, headers/exhaust, wheels/tires to make it functional. If you don't bother to do all that, you might as well just put a big cam in a 454 and tell everbody you have a " race motor" in the car.

Knife have you priced a 572 over here in the great white north, i'm hearing 20 grand..... if its a cruiser with some fun drag action you should look at a 502 and put a cam in it. That will get you to about 575hp which imho is lots unless your doing the chassis. I believe i am going this route for my 67, just seems to make more sense to me, but thats my opinion. If your rely set on more than that the Shaffiroff 540 seems like a good piece that will rock you socks off for far less than a 572.

Hey Cecil, I hear you.

Hey all i'm sayin is 572 is great buuuuuutttt can you use it? I have helped built many "race" engines for our stockcars and they just are a pain in the a__ to keep nasty RE. fast. I just can't justify 20 large for braggin rights you can't back up because all it does is turn tires to smoke!

Isn't turning tires into smoke the whole reason behind big block Chevelles? :D I see lots of guys at car shows with huge hp under the hood - yet few of them will ever run their cars at the drags. Bragging rights are apparently sufficient for most enthusiasts.

the reason why i asked this is because a buddy is a relative of the owner of a gm dealer real close to home.

i could probably get the 572 for just a little bit more than the 502, some overseas promotional deal or something.

if anyone asks why 600+ in a chevelle, i ask: why not?

the trick is finding a way to make it hook up. if the deal works, i am willing to try.

why would anyone want power that they can control? the best feeling is when your nervous for those split seconds before the right foot hammers down.

and by the way, aint nothing wrong with tire smoke!!!! tongue.gif

It will be a daily driven car. As has been said Chevelles are heavy so torque is definitely your friend. Besides, tires can be found cheap! ;)

Hey Knife if you can get 1 at a great deal i concur get it! In fact if you can get 2 let a fellow Canuck in on the deal as i am looking at a 502 for a steal but if the 572 is right dollar wise shut up buckle up and hang on! Ralph

I just wanted to give a little warning about some of the "engine deals" out there. Many of them are put together with the cheapest ( made in China) parts to be found. I don't put much faith that someone like Shaffiroff says they are all dyno tested. A friend of mine bought one of these, at a very healthy price, and it had major problems! I have a 509 that I put together with the best parts avaiable. Trust me, these good parts cost considerably more that the cheap stuff. I guess, to sumarize, I would rather have a really well build 427 that a "designer" 540. Just my opinion.

Streetable/drivable big cube chevy engines are where it's at IMHO. Fuel injection is a great thing. I am running the Ram Jet 502 in my 72 El Camino. I don't race it but I drive it like it was stolen. :D I didn't make major changes to allow for all that torque. I haven't broken anything to date. I have a 12 bolt, 3:31 posi-trac rear axle. If I drive it right, it gets 19 MPG with the a/c on. The only problem is trying to drive it right! graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Just my opinion.Let's see, the stuff I got with my 540 shortblock was:
Eagle forged crank
Eagle H-beam rods
SRP forged pistons
Speed-Pro Plasma moly rings
Merlin III block
(and it all wasn't cheap!)

If you ask me, that all sounds like good stuff. And if you wanted to upgrade to something like a Callies Dragonslayer, you could. They provide a miriad of options. I think the "designer" stuff can be useful if you don't want to hassle with assembling it yourself or you want something different. You can always have Shafiroff put in "the best parts" if you wanted to. But that's MY opinion. ;)
