: Holley Carb #'s
SimonGBarr Feb 27th, 05, 11:18 PM I have a '66 Chevelle Super Sport with a 396. The Holley carb has a List # of 3420. Everything I can find on the carb says I should have a 4160 Carb. Do these numbers cross reference? I can't even find the '3420' number on the Holley reference web site. It's like it doesn't exist. Any thoughts? Thanks.
dyno jonn Feb 27th, 05, 11:42 PM A List 3420 Holley is correct for a 1966 396/360 horse with an automatic trans. An automatic trans in a 66 Chevelle should be a glide. If that is your combination, a 3420 is the right carb. The 4160 designation just means that your carb has a metering plate for secondary jetting instead of changable jets like were used in 4150 series carbs.
67chevy2 Feb 28th, 05, 12:21 AM Simon; 4160 is the model number, while 3420 is the list. You have the correct carb, as Jon said. Your metering block number should be 4723, it is rated at 600 cfm, has externally adjustable floats, and an idle vent. If these criteria match, you're good to go! That is, assuming you have a 'glide. SimonGBarr Feb 28th, 05, 1:19 PM Thanks for the confirmation, it puts my mind at ease. I am running the stock powerglide tranny.

cmeyss Mar 1st, 05, 1:29 PM Not to steal the post, but on the same subject is list #3140 for a 396/325 automatic?
dyno jonn Mar 1st, 05, 1:53 PM 3140 shows for 65 ~ 396/325hp Chevelle or full size car. Must be an error in Colvins book since there weren't any 65 396/325 Chevelles. Says it's for cars with automatic transmission. If it's a 3140-1 it's for a 66 full size car with a 427/390hp and automatic. I'm gonna look in a Holley book to be sure.
[edit] Must be a bunch of bad info around on the 3140 carb. Holley shows it for 65 1/2 Chevrolet & Chevelle with 396 eng. Holley shows 3140-1 as 65-66 Chevrolet & Chevelle with 396 eng.
Now I've confused myself. Think it's time for a beer! graemlins/beers.gif

Gavel Mar 1st, 05, 6:41 PM I'm trying to decide on a new carb also to replace my spread bore Q-jet on a 70 350/300hp automatic.
Holley's web site says model 4175 which is a 650cfm but there are a few different ones.
The Edelbrock 1901 looks exactly like the Q-jet.
Any suggestions?
thanks..............
67chevy2 Mar 2nd, 05, 1:15 AM Jon; My book; "Chevrolet by the Numbers", by Colvin, on page 149, states '65-'66 "396/325hp", and "427/390hp". It does not specify Chevelle. I would interpret this as "passenger", or " full size", as it appears it was not available in the '65 Chevelle. BUT, on page 143, it does indicate both passenger and Chevelle with 396/325 and automatic transmission!
I have more faith in Alan Colvin than most others, but there are still a few contradictions and discrepancies in his books! Are we absolutely sure there were no '65 Chevelles produced with the 396/325?? Does anyone out there know? Just wondering.

cmeyss Mar 2nd, 05, 10:02 AM Jonn/Steve-
The reason I asked is that I was reasonably certain that the carb I have on the car is the original, but I always like to verify these things when I can. Here is a picture of it, not sure but maybe the other numbers on there would help. Thanks for your efforts...

67chevy2 Mar 2nd, 05, 2:03 PM Craig; The bottom three digits,"5A1", represent the date. In that case, it would be correct for your '66. 5= 1965, A= November, and 1= first week. This is acceptable if your car's build date is the first week of February '66 or earlier.
My book shows 396/325 A/T, and 427/390 A/T. This does not mean it is incorrect for your car, as even Colvin admits that he doesn't have "all" the correct info. I'd say use it. If a judge questions it, just smack him on the back of the head! :D
EDIT: Oh, and I just noticed that you weren't the same guy! Craig, that is the correct carb for your 396/325. graemlins/hurray.gif

67chevy2 Mar 2nd, 05, 2:14 PM Jon; The beer only adds to the confusion! I just now figured out that I was looking up two different carbs, and I only had nine Buds last night! graemlins/beers.gif
cmeyss Mar 3rd, 05, 8:40 AM Thanks Steve. That would match as the build date of my car is the 3rd week in November. You all were a great help (as usual)...
