Was there an indash tach available with the standard Malibu sweep dash in 1970? I have never seen or heard of one. Does it take the place of the clock? Anyone have any pictures or one for sale? Might like to go this way with my '70 El Camino. All replies appreciated.

That's EXACTLY what I did.
I've got a '70 Malibu with the sweep dash, the car was originally a clock delete, so...
I bought a Sun mini-tach, disassembled it and made my own mounting and even painted the yellow and redlines! Mounted it in the clock area--looks almost stock, works great!
If I would have taken more time I would have re-routed the coil wire feeding the tach, because now I hear the "spark plug song" on my stock AM radio because the coil wire is too close to the radio/antenna.
It really livens up a sweep dash though http://www.chevelles.com/forum/cool.gif
For your original question--no tach was ever available in the sweep dashes.
The tach was ONLY available with the 3 pod dash WITH the extra cost full instrumentation option. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif

Me Too!
Mounted it in the clock block off plate. Its not terribly practical, but lets me know that the motor is running & cruise RPM.

They didn't make the tach for the sweepstyle dash in the Malibu, but they made one for the sweep dash in the Nova! The '68-72 Nova's have a sweepstyle speedo very similar to the malibu's and they had an optional tach that was located to the left I think? This tach may have the dimensions to fit in the malibu sweep style instrument cluster! Does anyone know for sure? Or does anyone have a nova with this option?

SSuper Dave -
The tach was part of the U14 Special Instrumentation option. If you ordered that, you automatically got the dash with the round gauges like the SS cars. I'm proud to say that my documented 70 ragtop (non-SS) came from the factory with that setup.

I was wondering about what style was used in the sweep-style dash on '69-'70 Chevy full-size. I believe it may have been the same sweep-type tach as offered in the Nova. Or was it? Does anyone know?
