I just finished changing the head gasket on my old 307 while I was at it I changed the heads to some 1.94/1.50 350 heads with 76cc chambers. got every thing done went to crank it all I got was some graemlins/angry.gif  poping out the exhaust and through the carb her and there. it just wouldnt fire up. so after this I varyfied that I had spark and fuel its there.I set the valve lash once again just to make shure and still no fire. I set the timing once again by waiting for the #1 exhaust valve to close when the balancer is close to 0 degrees still no fire just sputtering and poping. any help? guys

have you check your timing. Is the distributor in properly?

Also make sure your spark plug wires are connected right. Firing order problem.

Sounds like you are 180° off to me.I think that you are on the #6 firing stroke.

sounds like a timing, wiring issue if it was a valve in your new set of heads, she'd pop out the exaust all right, but while running. verify firing order. good luck...

chevelle71,Try placing your finger over the spark plug hole on #1 (dr side front cyl/with plug removed)) and then turn the motor over slowly with a socket on the crank untill you feel some compression and then turn it a little more untill the tming mark on the ballancer lines up with the 0 on the timing tab to ensure you on the #1 firing stroke. Then check your firing order 18436572 clockwise arround the dist with #1 plug wire going just to the left of the dist dwell adj window in the cap. I forgot which one is # one for hei, sorry. Cylenders 2,4,6,8 are on the pass side front to rear and cyl's 1,3,5,7, are on the dr side fron to back.

Now you just proceed to plugging in wire # 8 (the next one after #1) into the dist cap going in a clockwise direction following the 18436572 firing order untill all the wires are plugged in and you should fire right up then if all else if ok/correctly installed & adjusted.

Good luck.
