My 69 Malibu 350 makes a really annoying and embarrassing screeching sound when I turn my wheel. It happens when I am almost at lock and sounds really bad. My question is, is this a problem with the pump, box, pulley or hoses? I would really like to get this fixed so I don’t have people giving me weird looks when I am parking.

A lot of the times it screams because the belt is loose. it should have less than 1/2" of deflection when fully tight. Try and tighten it and see if the screaming stops or gets quieter.

I have the same problem on my chevelle and I was told that the pump is making the noise because it is under strain. I don't know what the strain it is, but now that I think of it, that doesn't make a lot of sense.

Well, if it screeches when you turn to hard then that's the p/s box. That's normal

Try getting a wrench or something in there, and have someone's help, so one of you can pry her tight as possible and the otehr one tighten the bolt. Also, belt dressing can be purchased at any automotive store and helps the belt grip the pulley better. Try that and let us know how it goes.
