If an engine is taken to the machine shop and gone through and everything, then does it matter what order the original main caps go on front to back (excluding the rear main)? Thanks.

Absolutely. They have to go back where they came from.

I would like to add that most caps are numbered from the factory. Sometimes you have to use a magnifying glass to see the numbers, but they are there. We usually glass bead the caps, which makes it even easier to see the numbers.
