I have a couple of questions regarding getting high compresion big cam cars through emmisions.
The test is both idle and roller.
I have my 70 elcamino that runs low 11's here is the combo:
3200 lb + me.
400SB, 12.5:1, Sprotsman II heads, holley 750 DP, tall Victor junior. 4500 stall ATI converter (car starts moving about 1700 RPM) and 4.11 rear gears, full 3" exhaust. Idles at 800 in gear, very rough...
Cam is a Schneider: lift .585/.608 255/263 @.050, LS=105, lift is with 1.6 rocker arms.
I will be running street legal 100 octaine unleaded.
I want to be able to drive the car once in awhile to local cruses and for victory laps.
I will probably take it through like it is with the race tune in it to see how it does.
Questions...
Would putting 1.3 ratio rocker arms on just for the tests help? I don't want to swap cams.
Do addatives really help?

Any other comments and recamendations would be appreciated. Thanks
Dan

as for additives, im personally not a big fan of em. just run a high quality synthetic oil. no reason to use dino juice w/ the close clearances we use nowadays.

Do they do a visual? if so it won't pass that either. There is no way your combo will even come close to passing a legitimate smog test.

OK, get into your computer and check your states home page and look up it's I/M rules and see for yourself!! Probably will take some doing to get to them.....

Try the Secretary of State, then maybe Dept of Revenue (or whatever they call your license buearu). Heck, it may be under Public Safety???

Or go ask a State Trooper point blank where they are! BUT be NICE ta the MAN...

Here in MO, we have the Visual thing, too but my '67 is one year tooo old!!!

BTW, can you get a "specialty plate", like for either a historical vehicle or maybe hobby vehicle that will allow you to drive only so much and not have to be bothered by the I/M Program????

They do not do a visual, I talked to a guy a few weeks ago with a blown (6:71) BB 70 elcamino and he swaps cams to get through.
Basically they just want to see it blow the numbers.
I don't really want to swap cams, but I think I can make my cam smaller with the 1.3 rocker arms.
What do you think?

Thanks so far for the replys.

In missouri you don't have to pass emissons if your car is 70 or older.

Here in Cali, we don't have to get it smoged if it's 73 or older.

With the 1.3 ratio rockers you may run into a few additional problems, such as pushrod size. The real downer is I doubt it will work as your DCR will get sooooooo high. Can we say PING? I hope you get it through.

1970 emissions standards are not terribly hard to meet. Your combo will probably break the HC meter, though, with that cam profile.

I have eeked my cars through Wisconsin emissions by bumping the timing back and leaning out the carb until it barely runs. The readings that get recorded are unbelievably low, near zero a few times.

But the best thing that worked in my favor is making a huge stink about the roller test. First insist on driving the car yourself on their rollers (they won't let you). Make up a story about some punk kid who thrashed your car the last time you brought it in. Don't be an ******* , but expess serious concern over them damaging your car. This is usually enough that they will cut the test short or "wave" you through. My experience, of course.

Good luck!

Hey Dan,have you thought about a pair of cats with bolt on flanges spliced into the exhaust.Run it through the sniffer, drive it home unbolt the cats and remount the straight pipes back on ?
The pipe sections you cut out need to be welded up with flanges also in order to remount, but the cats will last as long as you need to pass the sniffer. Manuel
