I am restoring a '65 Chevelle 300 Deluxe 4 dr. sedan that has a 283 engine in it. My problem is before I became the owner of the car, the owner had the water pump replaced with a long version water pump for this car. This places the upper pulley out past alignment (extended further out) with the bottom pulley. I am thinking that there should be a short version of the water pump. Am I correct? You can look on the passenger side of the engine and the both pulleys look to have proper (straight) alignment, but the driver side (alternator side) the upper pulley appears to be spaced forward by about 3/4-1" past the straight line alignment with the bottom pulley. Should this be this way? I have several questions.

Where is the best company to buy this short version of water pump from?

I placed the water pump on its legs and measure from the face of the 4 hole hub (that mates to the fan & spacer) to the table surface. I came up with approximately 5 3/4". Is this the length for a long version water pump?

If so, does anyone know what the dimension is for a short version water pump from the face of the hub to a level surface?

The new water pump that I had installed came from autozone and is evidently the wrong pump (long version).

Anyone have any solutions? Thanks for any and all help in this matter. I have been dealing with this dilemma for over a week now. My car does not have power steering or air conditioning. It only has the one alternator belt. I hope this helps in answering my questions.

Any "real" auto parts place will have your pump. I got one for my '65 327 at NAPA. I bought a couple of others for other cars at Carquest recently. Carquest pumps are made by Airtex and seem like good quality and have worked fine. Pulleys should be aligned for long belt life. If the guy just put the wrong pump on and didn't mess with the pulleys and brackets new pump should fit just fine. Go to the parts place with your old pump in hand and compare it to a new one. Just describe your car and they will look up the correct part. They almost certianly be willing to allow you to inspect what your going to buy. If not, do an about face and go somewhere else. Not to Knock Pep Boys, but they would have sold me the wrong pump for my Plymouth. False economy to buy a "rebuilt". Good luck.

You can still buy an AC Delco pump. YO and probably Ground up sell them.
